In September 1919 in a tragic accident HMS Verulam (F19) detonated a British mine in the Baltic and sunk but in 1943 a second HMS Verulam (R28) was commissioned.

Her first CO was Lt Cdr William Scott Thomas DSC, RN, the paternal Grandfather of the actor Kristin Scott Thomas, whose story is told in "My Grandfather's War" on Wednesday 11 December at 9 pm on Channel 4 (watch it live or on catchup).

The second HMS Verulam was adopted by St Albans, the former Roman town of Verulamium, and escorted eight Arctic Convoys to north Russia and in 1945 sank a Japanese cruiser.

She remained in service until 1970, the St Albans Sea Cadet Unit was named after her and her bell hangs in the Council Offices.

The story of both ships is told here: HMS__Verulam
