Hi my great granduncle Arthur Alan Paternoster was in Royal Navy during WW2 I presume he joined up in 1939 as I’m going by his Australian Navy record he went over to Australian Navy in 1949 and left in 1952 I’ve uploaded some photos of him he married an Australian woman in 1945 in Wollongong, Australia and emigrated out there the family never heard from him again until he met up with one of his brothers who also emigrated out there.

Need help trying to understand his Australian Navy record and abbreviations I know he went over to Canada during war as my great grandmother told me.

    Regards

    Stephen.

As a rating in the FAA he may have served in a host of diverse roles including catapult armed merchantmen; merchant, escort or fleet aircraft carriers; cruisers or shore based – probably some combination – his full RN record should provide you with the details.

There is a note on the NAA record that you uploaded that approval was 'sought for his discharge in Australia if selected for RAAF commission', which he received – effective 22 September 1952, gazetted 11 December 1952:

Having been promoted Flying Officer in the interim, he resigned his commission effective 11 March 1955:

The Australian gazette has six listings for him in all: Trove

Thanks I am thinking of getting his Royal Navy record most likely it will be transferred to national archives I’m currently trying to get my great grandads army record from them.

Had no idea Arthur went into Australian Air Force guess he must have a record for that.

He joined the RN 4/7/39 on a 12yr engagement.
He was in the RN but on loan to the RAN from 10 Apr 49. He then transferred to the RAN - 'Admiralty approve of this rating being discharged in Australia on completion of RN engagement (3/7/51) provided it is not now necessary for him to be retained for further service in accordance with.....'
