There might be an opportunity to be an 'extra'?

Not my bag but I'm sure between me, Rich, and Jan we could show them where the Victoria Cross's grew in 1940 (shamelessly stolen line from the James Coburn classic Iron Cross)

Oh dear, I do hope that hollywood is not involved. At least the code words shouldn't upset anyone.
PLEASE get someone who knows the correct kit.

Are there enough preserved vehicles to make a decent jetty?

Sadly, WWII films are always atrociously inaccurate. Give me a well researched documentary any day.

Part of the issue is a number of Historical Advisory firms 'run by vets' have set up in recent years, which... if you watch any production they advise on tend to have very modern weapons handling, movement, drill, tactical language etc...

I'd rather a film on St Valery and suspect this may well end up becoming the factoid ridden drivel we all know and hate.

I would suggest our Dunkirk expert members give them (Christopher Nolan) a shout.

They will either have the budget to get things right or they wont.

I suspect they are either going to give 'Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man' the 'A Bridge Too Far' treatment, or go for the personalised approach of the John Mills version. I can't really see how else it could be tackled.

I think it will be on the John Mills lines of an individuals journey to get home. If it is campaign based then they will need a seriously large budget, I suspect even the special effects to cover the campaign would solve the third world debt.

I think that they should re-write it so it has an Alamo-type ending at the water's edge, in the spirit of the final scene of Fury, with Tom Cruise as the leading actor. At the very least it should be told from an American's viewpoint....

Just a joke guys, no need to get anyone's panties all twisted up over it!

Hmm... so we find an American actor, cast him as the Canadian Macnaughton and have a large plot swathe of Canadians ready to go, but not really going... turning the Canadian advance party around quickly...

I'd rather have something in the manner of Cumberbatch playing Jimmy Langley in the BBC multiparter than the ineffectual officer played by Ken Cope in the 1958 version. One thing for Sebag-Montefiore's book is that there are enough personal stories for them not to have to invent characters.

I'd rather go with Hollywood. If it's a European production, it will be a tale of divisive Brits trying to derail (again) the Germans' genuine attempt to uniify and pacify the continent (again)!

More seriously, following 3 Div would be a useful exercise as Montgomery could do with some positive, controversy-free exposure.

Would probably make time to see it just so I could have a "contemporary" view of these events back then i.e. what we are expected to think now and not what we were actually expected to think of it all back in 1940. Comments on the BW version anyone i.e. Drews post #13 above? (although there's probably already a thread?), plucky, dauntless Brits etc?

If it's very modern it might include the element of those that had to write the news and/or propaganda (?) great defeat turned into a victory no less (?)

As well as the views of the French army and civilians and would probably have an America lead or two, and a selection of fine European actors to boot, so might have that kind of universal catch all appeal that would make the most economical sense. They'd have to figure out some way to tailor it to the growing Asian markets too ;)

It matches/tugs at a thought I had recently though about those BEF that fought on in France after Dunkirk and whether there were any fine examples yet of tales about them?

The regimental history of the 9th L makes an interesting read from the months of May and June 1940 and the 1940 battle(s) of the Somme and the race back to Cherbourg, Brest, St.Nazaire and even Bordeaux (?) etc. might make a fine film-ic tale to tell. Perhaps along the lines of the BW version with John Mills et.alia on Dunkirk?

I don't know if there is an actual film about the sinking of the Lancastria 1940 yet but I googled out and wasn't getting much there. Even now despite the occasional mention it isn't mentioned much (ps. I've seen the Lancastria threads v.good on here!)

It's all interesting so I sort of look forward (at the moment!) to see how they do.

The one thing about American films aka Saving Private Ryan etc. that still niggles though a bit is it's attitude to the Brits and Canadians and apparent sole focus on the US. It just seemed "necessarily" hurtful and at the very least a bit blunt. But perhaps it was just "referencing" some comments that were being spoken out-loud back then at the time and was "fair" to the circumstances that were blinkeredly seen by those that spoke them. Brit bashing by Americans is a bit of thing and dates back to the 18th Century and before no doubt, bit of a two-way street sometimes too I guess ;)

I can't see that they'd (US) have much of a nag in the Dunkirk race though, unless as I guess it's from the point of view of some American journalist or some such detailed to rush up from Paris to "get to the truth out there"??!

    All the best,

    Rm.

The main thing that sticks with me from the John Mills Dunkirk is the Artillery battery of 25 pounders in a wood that puts down a rather awesome barrage only to be wiped out 5 minutes later by a couple of Stukas
