No 5 MkI Enfield in service NWE

I have searched the forum (maybe I missed the thread). I am looking for information regarding the No5 MkI Enfield rifle (carbine) in service during testing in NWE. There is a photo and film showing troops ( Nov 1944) with them (see photo). It is said to possibly be 52nd lowland Div.

Now does anyone know what units received them for evaluation and how long they maintained them?

I don't know about 52nd Lowland but at least one commando unit had some No. 5s in NWE, 48 RM Commando. This IWM photo shows Lt. Col Martin Price, DSO, CO of No. 48, with a No. 5 in April 1945.

 

Iirc (it has been a while) Ian Skennerton covered the protracted trials (and tribulations) of the No.5. Unfortunately I no longer have access to a copy of 'The Lee Enfield Story'.

many years ago, a No 5 was dug up north of Wesel on landing/drop zone "A" - that's where 3rd Para Brigade was dropped on March 24th, 1945 as part of Op. Varsity. I am afraid the guy who found has died since - I do not know its whereabouts. Still - might be helpful information...

 

Funny you mentioned DZ A. I was just researching that DZ attempting to find who exactly the German forces were opposing them. (Another topic for another time)

So 1 Para Div were issued No 5s for Norway. It is literally piecing the puzzle together from various sources.
