Philip, I have to admit to being one of the best post's ive ever seen on this forum, even if its for the wrong reason. Especially downheartening to see the name of vince Goodwin. I remember saying to his daugther last September, your must be so proud, as he drank in full flow with current members of 2 Para. Ive got the photo's of him with his lucky coin. philip, can I ask that you PM me this list so that I can take it to my next Arnhem Vets night in Liverpool. RIP Phil
I have just dug out my copy of john Waddy's "A Tour of the Arnhem Batttlefields" which Vince signed as follows. Vince Goodwood Ex 'B' Coy 2nd Bn. Para. John Frost Bridge 1944 RIP x
Thanks for this post Philip. It's very sad to see so many names all gone in such a short space of time. Norman "Jock" Knight, (furthest left in the pic) a member of "the most famous 3" mortar team" of WW2. RIP.
Every time when I recieve the Newsletter I will post the names, I have done this for many years on our previous site Phil, if you email me I will send you the list
Andy Milbourne is of course also know for his book Lease of Life and his action behind the Vickers Gun, I have a dutch magazine from shortly after the war, that he and his wife visit the battlefields again.
Hi All, Yes very sad I know one name on the list Les Frater had the pleasure of meeting Les a few times on the coach trip with the Veterans to Arnhem...He also signed my Middlebrook book one of many that are no longer with us and for you all so that we don't forget them...
For info....Joe Sunley was one of the last if not the last person to see Captain L Queripel alive....he was ordered to leave the position by Queripel altohugh he wanted to stay......the rest is of course history..... Although as an aside one of my research assistants and I have spent some time looking for the 'original' citation for Queripel's VC at the NA but it seems to have been misplaced......
Sad to see to many great men pass away in such a short space of time. The story of the 1st Airbourne at Arnhem is what first got me interested in the history and stories of WWII, no matter how many times I see A Bridge too Far or how many books I read releating to Arnhem I am still amazed, proud and humble at the feat of arms these fine men and their brothers in arms displayed in 1944. RIP
It is always sad to see the obituaries of all these brave servicemen, especially such a large number in a short space of time. R.I.P. Tom
Guys, For info....looking at the list in the May issue of the AVC newsletter the youngest who's passed on was Jim Harper in August 2008 with an age of 83, the oldest was Rev James Morrison November 2008 aged 93. The period spanning their deaths ranged from June 2008 to April 2009...the last two honoured being both on the 7 April and one was Norman Knight of the Border mortar crew and the other being Charlie Baraclough of the 2nd Parachute Battalion..... Regret it's only going to be a lengthy list from now on......the club is slowly fading away....but will continue I feel for a few more years yet.....
HI AM Yes I agree saw Sir James Clemison Mike Duncey and John Waddy this May in Oosterbeek hotel.. My Mate Shamus is still going strong at 85 I believe...
Hi, I just wanted to say that i'm Bob Elleray's (2 para ba) Grandaughter.Grandad passed away suddenly a week before christmas 2008 and is missed by so many people. He was loved and respected by all that knew him and he never lost that naughty twinkle in his eye. His friend was Dave Brooks (also 2 para) they passed away within a day of each other. We think they must have cooked that up between themselves It's so lovely to see his name mentioned here- it makes me feel really proud. Thank you Caroline x
