    Owen,

Do you have any idea of the identity of a Dornier shot down over Swindon and displayed in the town square? These details are from 16 Nov 1940 with additional info that this exhibition was for gathering money for Spitfires.

Passing on this request from a contact.

    Regards
    Peter.

    Salisbury ;)
It was in the Salisbury Journal about a year ago, in the 'memories' section. Black and white photo of a Dornier 217 parked in the market square outside the Guildhall

    Owen, Ferahgo,

Many thanks for looking. Seems it might after all have been another town.

    Regards

Could it have been one of these fundrasing
whistle stop tours, I seem to remember seeing
something somewhere that they did these type
of tours to raise money for the spitfire fund
where they would display a shot down plan.
When you say outside the Guild Hall it could
    be a possibility

Peter, what about this shot? its not
Swindon, but London, could this be
    your Dornier? the caption reads

This fighter bomber was brought down almost
intact, drawing onlookers in this London Street

When you look at the picture the pilot either did
a bit of smart flying to get down in one piece or
maybe this was more of a display. The reason I say
this is because the lamposts on both sides of the street
are intact and the shed type building behind it has
not been touched, but I guess this could have been
put up after the event or it came down the street
in the other direction, either way what a site on your
way to work in the morning.

The pic is from the Daily Mail book (Britain at War) unseen archives by Maureen Hill, it says it did crash there, but dos'nt give a street name. your right it does look like the area of Finsbury by the Town hall.
Here's another from the same chapter.

Great shot Kieron, but my source says its Swindon. I'll have to get back to him on this one. As has been suggested, it might have been a rolling exhibition.

    Many thanks to all.

    Regards
    Peter.

Really just a pile of scrap, I wonder if they went on to make Spitfires to shoot more German aircraft down....:)

    Gotthard,

You are correct with the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
It is an early version with tail strut supports, probably an E/4 version.
