    Gotthard,

You are correct with the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
It is an early version with tail strut supports, probably an E/4 version.

Good call on the struts Tom. Didnt see that! :D

The pic is from the Daily Mail book (Britain at War) unseen archives by Maureen Hill, it says it did crash there, but dos'nt give a street name. your right it does look like the area of Finsbury by the Town hall.
Here's another from the same chapter.
    Rob

I'll try and get the thread back on to subject.

This link would appear to confirm that it was Finsbury.

The salisbury one was definately a Dornier. It was in fairly good nick, engine and cockpit damage being all i think

Just checked all of September and October Dornier (All variants) losses in Vols 1+2 of The Blitz and most seemed to have crashed in London or the home counties. There is the odd exception of one crashing in Wales and another in Scotland.

One crashed near Wells (South of Bristol) on October 16 and that appears to be the nearest of all those listed in the books.

Dorniers had excellent flying characteristics and often flew long distances without the crew, after they had all bailed out.

If my memory serves me correctly the Do17 was considered obsolete
during the Battle of Britain, but due to the problems with the Ju88 coming on line, the Dorniers represented more than 25% of the total bombing strength of the Luftwaffe at the time.

Some, that were fortunate to land in fields, made textbook wheels up landings completely unaided.

Funny you should say that...I just read about one where the crew bailed out and it landed intact 40ish minutes later after it ran out of fuel on a mud bank.

    Andy,
There was me thinking my grey cells were getting past it.:)

I'll have to look in my books and see if I can come up with a photo of a dornier that landed unaided. Unless you already have one to hand?
