I just learned through twitter about the bombardment of Genoa, Operation Grog. I'm wondering what the military objective of the bombardment was, as Wikipedia gives no information about this other than mentioning that there was a damaged battleship in the harbour, which was not hit.
Four cargo ships were sunk and many more damaged. A 15" shell from HMS Malaya hit the cathedral, failed to explode, and has been kept as a souvenir.
