Stefan How did you do on the training course In World War II, Arisaig House became the headquarters for the Scottish section of the Special Operations Executive, who ran paramilitary training courses at sites within the surrounding area, to prepare agents for missions in Occupied Europe; the remoteness of the rough bounds made it ideal Arisaig - Wikipedia Hope you had a good holiday and sampled lots of ............................ TD, At least I did a 1 hour run and my General (the wife) was pleased. We had a great holiday in Scotland, lots of hiking, including lonly places like Knodart and a busy Edinbourgh. What surprised us most was the friendly people and the tough girls, running around in T- shirts with only 7° C and the wind blowing. Stefan
I was in Knoydart last week myself and Arisaig and Mallaig with my work - lucky to live around these parts - well especially when the sun does come out - great SOE country. I hope you enjoyed your holiday. Regards Hugh Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge last week.
If you were in Knoydart I hope you found time to visit the Old Forge Pub at Inverie, Britain's remotest mainland pub, only accessible by boat or hiking in. One of my favourites, although I'm told not as good as it once was. Tim
I met a man from 41 RM Cdo who went through the course at Achnacarry. The thing he remembered most vividly was paddling across a body of water in rubber boats while under MG fire. The fire was live and when a couple of guys were hit and fell in the water they left them in the drink and just kept right on paddling.
Couldn't really go in this time Tim being on duty and needing to drive Knoydart is well known to me though I used to live there as a kid circa 1962. I am told that too about the pub but it has been a long time since I crossed its door. Regards Hugh
Hugh, The first time I had a holiday in Scotland I took a picture of the monument and later showed it to my Late Father. He promptly informed me that when he was with the Recce Corps, they did unarmed combat and close quarter fighting with the Commandos. It was only later that I read that such training happened. Regards Tom
we have been in Arisaig, Mallaig, Spean Bridge and Knoydart and the Pub Watched some locals playing snoker and had an Espresso. Only the belgian guy was a bit odd. Stefan.
