I would love to get my stuff out of the hands of the Russians, close my Photobucket account, and put the stuff elsewhere. The problem is that some of my public folders contain images of my favorite comic book character (see icon to left) and I'd hate for Love and Rockets fans to find dead links instead of the images. Is there anything to be done about that, any kind of redirect I can set up?

I think a lot of my earlier pictures were on the photo thingy above and have since disappeared due to them now charging a subscription. Am I correct in thinking that if I paid the subscription would they all appear again ?

Does anyone know how much a month it is?

    Cheers

Just logged in and all my pics and vids are still on there. I'll try and download them to see if it works.

Initially the price they wanted to charge was RIDICULOUSLY high but they have dropped it considerably. You'd have to go look at their website for the exact amount though.

    Merged.

Personally, I'd download anything you might want to save from PB.
They've had to appoint an entire new management team after this debacle, and I wonder if they will survive as a site. The web-wide loathing being so strong now, and the place still being riddled with spam and pop ups like something from 2001.
    I wouldn't give them a penny now.

Drew, you did indeed have PB images.
(You may have denied it at the time, but I spent a fair while fixing your Wormhout etc. threads. Deffo photobucket there.)
Trouble is, you also used imageshack quite a bit. And lots of image shack images seem to go tits up after a while.

I think photobucket hosted images may have reappeared anyway.
If not, check the post you want to restore is definitely photobucket before paying anyone.

    And to reiterate:
The irritation at photobucket has nothing to do with image storage.
It is all about image hosting.
Not about losing images, but losing connections to images and the difficulty of putting the right image back in the right place.
You can, and probably should, have pics backed up as much as you like. None of which has any bearing on the PB thing.

Apologies if I've already mentioned this (I don't recall), but somewhere down the line they also reduced the size/quality of the images I uploaded, which is irksome as I no longer have the (now superior) originals.

    Trust no one!

keep the buggers backed up on cheap ssd drives
really the only way to save lost effort

Why SSD? More expensive per Gigabyte than a HDD, data degrades faster, little chance of data recovery in case of failure.

Either way whatever media used, multi copies, in multiple locations is the key.

And now, after restoring previously embedded images but with a watermark, and dropping the ludicrous price hike to more rational hosting charge (but still one nobody initially agreed to) - they're blurring them
(Odd that they still have mine, after I deleted everything in the account... but there ya go.).

The sooner this untrustworthy excrescence of a company plummets toilet-wards, the better.

Photobucket still has your photos, and it wants you to come back
    Imagine...

Off to rebuild the 'Name that vehicle' thread... again.

I've posted shed loads of stuff that has been damaged by that site, without any warning. I've got most of the original files and over time, I'll repair and replace them using the windows resizing tool, in order to reduce the size of the file.

I won't be held to ramsom and they will never get a penny from me. The Scottish War Graves website in particular has been badly hit by those morons.

I've always been leery of photo hosting sites, largely because buried deep in the terms and conditions are often weasely bits of text that give them rights over my material. Are there any reputable and reliable ones?

    I dunno...
We lost a lot of pics to a tech error when a previous owner moved software, and then the old user albums had to be shut down under another change by the current regime. (Though we did tell people about that in advance! One did get proper irate about it, though...)

I don't much embed any more after this Photobucket madness, but still find images stored on Google images (Free! - unlimited High quality) embed OK:

    eg.

Embedding from someone like Google does save on storage/bandwidth bills for Otto, so I should be encouraging it really.

  19. Err... what image? I see only ""...
Do I have to connect to Google to see it? This surely defeats the purpose.

Has it really been 2 yrs!
Thanks to considerable help from vP at the time, I've been able to restore many of my broken image links, whenever I can them that is. Still cropping up with depressing regularity. However I've had to concede that some will never be identified from my own storage.

The blurred image tactic is yet another slap in the face. Don't seem to link to their site back either?
The "Proudly hosted by p/b" watermark at least gave mild amusement periodically, depending on context. Maybe they noticed the dodgier examples, or maybe they just aren't proud of themselves any more.
