At least this one's linkable from Triumph in A level results! | The Read School where you'll find a couple more taken toward this area but from over by the front door

Steve, there are no sceptics on this forum. The evidence is generally so well presented that there is little need to be ! :)

Well done Steve, Just shows you how times have changed, what a difference between those two photographs, the difference in hopes for the future. I will let you know what comes back from Reads themselves.

Shaun, would be really interested in what you come up with. My family lived in Drax at this time, next door to the Huntsman pub, my Grandfather was the woodwork teacher/caretaker at Reads, hence the possible connection but l cannot recognise anyone in the photo.

    Regards,

    Nick

So perhaps a hand-me-down from your granddad Nick ? In my family's case, for instance, my (reserved occupation) dad joined the HG whilst his (WW1 SWB invalid) dad joined the ARP. No ARP records having survived, according to TNA, I've settled for the news clipping and press photo of him (amongst others sitting round an oil-drum brazier on duty) handed down to me as evidence of this - so easily forgotten unless reminded as I am now. If your granddad similarly opted, say to act as school firewatcher rather than go gallivanting round the countryside, he'd have probably got matey with the HG company sharing his patch - their captain looks like a very reasonable & likeable chap so no need to suppose any 'Mainwaring-Hodges' animosity to prevent it - and he may have even been the photographer since the photo isn't one of the usual slick 'pro' jobs ! And there the curiously-shaped negative, as evidenced in 3 corners, may prove diagnostic if you've maybe got an heirloom camera to consider as having possibly taken it ...

Just visited my stepfather in Camblesforth (near Drax) and got some information.

The young lad in the centre of the photo (middle row, six from left) IS Peter Chapman. His widow is my stepfather's elder sister and she confirmed it. I knew him well - he died about 20 years ago. He was about 16 or 17 at the time and working on a farm.

The man with the impressive moustache front row far right is Tommy Tomlinson, who worked for the council as a road sweeper.

Four from the right on the front row is Alfred Lunn, who was a farmer in Newland.

Front row, third from the left is Eddie Bullock. I was a young lad growing up in the village in the 70's and I think I remember his face.

Back row five from the right is David Boast, who had a farm opposite Drax church.

I didn't get to visit my stepfather's elder sister while I was over in England (Marjorie Chapman, formerly Watson). Apparently, she recognized most of the faces in the photo. I'll write to her to try and get some more info. There might even be some Fenton's in there.

In identifing the photograph confusion arises beacause Selby area was affected by the Local Government Act 1972,effective from 1 April 1974 and became part of the North Riding. Before that it was traditionally part of the West Riding.

Going back to the old county boundaries,Selby (Selbye as it was spelt),was in the West Riding at a time when the North Sea was shown on some maps as the German Ocean. At that time, as it was on the 31 March 1974,the boundary between the West Riding and the East Riding was the RIiver Ouse, from York (Yorke) downstream to the Trent Falls (outlet of the Trent into the Humber). The area on the left bank being the East Riding and that on the right bank, being the West Riding.
