Too early for that, and we're expecting temperatures around 32ºC this weekend, but the days are noticeably becoming shorter :(

    The Autumn Seaside Town.
The seaside town in Autumn, the saddest place on Earth.
Dirty deserted boats rocking, in their end of seasons berth,

Ice cream adverts, rained stained, and sadly out of place,
Flower baskets with dead plants, all lacking former grace.

Shiny rain swept streets, with muddy leaf choked gutters.
Here and there an old coffee carton, adding to the clutter.

The shop awnings noisy flapping, in the West wind gale.
White plastic bags that tumble, along the beachside trail.

Shop fronts all darkened now, just vacant empty panes,
On the shelf a left over gift, a heart, a silver copy chain.

The seas are iron grey and angry, sweeping up the sand,
Summers gone, now the gales, will drive across the land.

Children’s voices quiet now, around the ice cream stalls,
No kiddies play on golden sand, no anxious parents call.

Summer yearning, the heartbreak of that love struck girl,
Men eagerly watched, the girl’s windswept skirts that swirl

The painful teenage heartaches of summer, tearfully gone away.
See the dry Autumn leaves drifting, was all this just yesterday?

Now Autumn’s here, and from the East, comes an icy blast,
Let us all be thankful! the Grockles have all gone home at last.

    WhiskeyGolf,

Couldn't agree more. We are parked near your place and this would have had to have been one of the worst winters on record.

You've got some nasty flooding happening over there Michael, I hope you and family/friends haven't been affected by it.

    Hi Wendy,

    Hi Wendy,

No, we are all on hills! Our house is about 10 doors up from that mighty river, the Yarra. It still looks like a creek. Unless something biblical happens, we will be alright.

Speaking of natural causes, I hope you and yours are not too near that earthquake zone. We are planning a visit to both islands next year. Poor old beautiful Christchurch. It looks terrible!

    Regards,

    Michael

I hope you have a better summer in the Southern Hemisphere than we have had in the Northern.
Oh it hasn't been that bad really

Although Za seems to be on a roll with the temperatures.
thank you Sapper for the poem

Yes Spring on its way and can't wait.

It has been Melbournes coldest and wettest winter for quite some time. We need the rain but I can leave the cold.

This year reminded me of the winters of the 60's when I used to ride my bike to school at Parade Preparatory College in Alphington. BBBBBBbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Where we are in the middle of the north island we do not have a quake fault line running through, we are not near the sea for a tsunami to hit, we don't have any active volcanoes in the vicinity, and we are above the mighty Waikato river so no worries about flooding - safest place in NZ actually - oh but when the 'mini' tornado hit NZ last year the only area it got was ours!! Can't win really!

    Hi Spidge,

Certainly has, and yes I too recall those freezing winters, not far from your area, in Essendon, ideally placed under the north-south runway approach to our then domestic / international airport (always the 'aerodrome' to us).

Those were the days. A lad could die of exposure from the frost accretions on his handlebars, think he was privileged to have enough money to buy a 19/6d Airfix Lancaster and go happy on the glue fumes without developing a dependency, get beaten up on the way home for the recreational pleasure of attackers and onlookers, suffer spinal injuries on playground see-saws whilst losing a life's front teeth walking past an errant swing.

No OH & S, no dealers, no i-pods.... I have told my kids how bland their lives are but they just say terrible things, like I'm too old......

    Well said Michael,

I think all of us with that vintage, despite our respective locations, can relate and agree with that.
By today's standards, all our parents would be summarily convicted of child abuse. And we just thought it was freedom!

Well it finnally looks as if the drought here in Victoria/Melbourne has had it's back well and truely broken.
Yep It's Spring down here, and the weather here in Melbourne Town has been much cooler during the day during this past winter than the previous years. I however just see it as a return to what were probably average temps, rainfall and so on before the 12+ year drought started. Untill this present flood event we were still behind the eight ball, great that 200+mm of rain finally fell in the catchemnet areas. It has been forcasted that we will have a wetter spring and summer than usual due to a expected La Nina event. The floods are not a nice thing for those who are caught up with them, however no person has been killed and buildings, belongings etc can be replaced. However the water reseviors have been and continue to have good flow into them, a month or two back we were still in the low 30% for water storages now we have reached 40+% and where it is flooded their will be silt and large amounts of ground water allowing for all sorts of native and planted flora to grow and flower well for the first time in many years.

We had a severe drought in 2007 and I hated it. I cannot imagine a 12 year one.

The Old Farmer's Alamanac is forecasting a cooler & wetter than normal winter for us. It is usually correct. Night temps have already been down in the high 50s a time or two, which is not the norm for us this time of year.
