The wolf is back in Holland. Recently several wolves were spotted in the eastern parts of Holland, they wander across the border from Germany, where there are larger populations of wolves:

First time since the last wolf is said to be shot in 1822 at the Wolfsberg near Groesbeek!

Recent sighting of a wolf in de Betuwe ("The Island") near Arnhem

A few days ago I stepped out my front door and was surprised by a beaver that jumped in front of me from my hedges. I proceeded to follow his lead and jump back. He then took off down the street. I caught a shot of him running away. It is surprising since there is no major water near me other that a small stream. He must have heard that I am writing about the Canadian Army in WWII and came to encourage me. IMG_5340.jpg

You should consider yourself lucky it wasn't a wild ram. :)

What's your subject, if I might ask?

    He might be a spy!

Give a few beavers some time and small streams can become large bodies of water.

    Seroster:

I am finalizing a book on the Canadian Army at Home 1939-45. It includes unit summaries (History, Command and Location) for Headquarters, Employment Platoons/Companies, Infantry, Cavalry, RCA, RCE and Veterans Guard of Canada units. Hopefully on publication, it will be followed by The Canadian Army in Britain and then The Canadian Army in NW Europe, Italy and Hong Kong.

    Is it a Parakeet?

Are you in West London or it's suburbs? I see them when staying at a friend in Shepperton and also in Ealing.

We were very lucky earlier this year to witness a bird box takeover.

A pair of blue tits were evicted by great tits. The female great tit did not destroy the blue tits eggs. She just laid one of her own, and then successfully hatched and raised 5 blue tit chicks and one great tit (the great chick tit is the one on the lower RHS of the picture.

This is probably a 1 in 100 event, but there are no reliable records covering this.

We may have had a similar thing last year, as we had five baby blue tits who were always accompanied by a baby great tit. But no nest camera to prove it.

    Yes, you are probably correct.

If you see these little mixed groups in June/July they may well be part of the same family. By August/September they start to form mixed species flocks. If you have garden bird feeders, you may see these mixed flocks of blue, great & sometimes coal tits arrive and leave together. They often seem to spend as much time squabbling as they do eating.

We have been using bird box cameras for the last 10 seasons. At the beginning of this year I said I wasn't going to waste any time fiddling with the system if it didn't fire-up when I connected the battery. Luckily it did still work, otherwise we would have missed this exciting natural event.

More notes here on my blog: Captain Bodgit: BirdBox2018: our mixed species nest

Heron fishing at the town centre pond Watford.
I could see an old boy on a mobility scooter using a horn to try to scare the Heron away
    Heron was not bothered

All we should have seen was wildlife this past weekend as we canoed through Algonquin Park. Instead, we were treated to a low level pass from 2 CC-130J's from 436 Transport Squadron, based at CFB Trenton, Ontario.

Barely over the tree tops when we saw them and a friendly wing waggle from the second aircraft as they passed by.
