There are a numbe rof references to 7 Fd Regt RA in Farndales "The years of defeat 1939-1941" One of the volume of the official RA history. If I get a chance ove the weekend, I'll transcribe them for you.

Phil, I would really appreciate that, I am finding it difficult to drag any info on the 7th regt. Do you know what equipment they used? still trying to ascertain how he was injured. Still trying to work out if some sort of misfire was involved or whether he actually was caught in a recoil. I am very ignorant of artillery practice but I would have thought a recoil injury was unlikely? if anyone knows if this was common I'd be very interested to find out.

    cheers,

    Tim

I'm not sure what 7 Fld were equipped with at the start of the war, probably 25 Pdr Field Guns, certainly by D-Day they had 105mm Priest self-propelled guns, a search on google for M7 Priest will produce numerous illustarions. It was an American equipment, and meant changing many of the drills as the American equipment used different settings (mils in place of degrees, for example). There was always a danger of a recoil injury, a moments inatention could be disasterous. The most likely cause of injury however, would be from dirty ammunition causing a premature. Various types of premature existed, those in the breech or barrel being the most lethal to the detachment.

As an aside, please bear in mind, the Navy use Gun "Crews" the Royal Artillery have Gun "Detachments" and never ever refer to the detachment as a team, that was the horses that drew the guns before mechanisation!

The above isn't a criticism, just aimed at saving embarresment when talking to gunners.

cheers for the heads up Phil, and again for the information. Once I get hold of his army records will it detail his injury or will it simply state that he was wounded in action?

I appreciate the time you are putting into this,

    Tim

Early August 1944 the Field Regiments handed back their Priests and were re-issued with 25 Pdrs.
Scarfe in Assault Division mentions that on afternoon on 14th August "for the first time since 1940 , 25 pounders of the Division shelled the enemy."

PS. Post you appeal in the RAA Associatio site, in the Regimental History section (I'm the moderator!). Hopefully, someone onthe site will be able to give you some background.

I have tried in vain to become a member, I joined a long time ago for the same reasons as we are now discussing but with much less information on my part. I tried to re register and my confirmation is now pending (It has been for a couple of days now).

I tried to find out some more info regarding my gramps' injury and he maintains it was a recoil to the groin. Is this likely given his position as a Layer within the detatchment?

I did start transcribing the entries in Farndales book, but there waws slightly more than I bargained for (or I'm just plain Lazy more like), so when I get a chance I'll scan the relevant sections and e-mail them to you, can you PM me an e-mail address.

Incidentally, I put a request on the RAA site for you, but didn't get any more than is already listed on this site.

In Holland around the Overloon/Venraij area they were using 25 pounders. But instead of firing at will they fired the lot at the same time. One hell of a bang. Lord knows what is was like the receiving end.

For Operation "VERITABLE" Holland 1945, at 05.00hrs on the 8th Feb 1050 Guns of all calibers opened fire at the same time, (it was still dark) for a five hour period of engagement. The Old Mans Regt was allotted 450 RPG - 100LBS Shells for this alone. Imagine being on the other end of that.

For the same operation, 337 battery of my Dad's regiment were operating the Land Mattress Rocket Projectors x 12. Also starting at 0500, they launched a combined salvo of 384 rockets onto the enemy. They did this another 6 times until 13-00 hours. Altogether 5000 rockets were despatched that day.

hello all. Yesterday a long lost collection of my grandfathers badges was rediscovered! going through them again for the first time in 15 years there were a few that I had forgotten about and may help to pinpoint more information about my gramps (he died from wounds when my dad was 3 in 46). I apologise for lack of photos but I can give a good description.

I discovered from help on this site that he was in the 3rd battalion 7th regt artillery. he was a gun layer. The two badges I would like to find out more about are both black diamond felt. One has a large red '3' embroidered on it the second has a large green 'H' with a small red '4' in the upper section of the H.

One final query is about a skull cap badge. it has 2 leg bones each diagonally protruding from behind the teeth. the skull is facing front.

thanks in advance to anyone who can shine light on this.

    all the best,
    Tim

Any chance you can post some pictures of the badges?

Do you mean battery rather than battalion?
