Hi this is a photo of my Dad taken in Poona 1945 I have been trying to find out what the ribbons above his left pocket represent any ideas? Cant make out the ribbons very well, but I would say Burma Star for sure then choice of Defence medal 39-45 star and war medal.
I am going to request his service records will it tell me on them? Can anyone tell me, if my Dad would have recieved his medals at the same time as the ribbons?
No you had to apply for the medals. Here's a list on WW2 medals. Ministry of Defence | Defence For... | Veterans | Medals | World War II Medal Summary
Hi Murn, I have three sets of service records for Burma campaign soldiers and these do state which medals they would be entitled to. The medals were then applied for or sent to families in the case of casualties. They came in an uninspiring cardboard box wrapped in grease proof sleeves along with the appropriate ribbons. I agree with Jason that one of the ribbons looks like the Defence medal, however, if he was still in India in 1945/6, I would of thought it unlikely he would have received any medals at that time? Could he have served in India before WW2, perhaps on the Northwest Frontier? Steve.
Medal on left as we look at pic is 100% 39-45 Star ribbon. Ministry of Defence | Defence For... | Veterans | Medals | 1939 - 1945 Star The sky blue appears almost white in pld photos. Seen lots like it on this forum. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=38456&d=1287166179
Here is the page from my Grandfather's service record with his entitlement. You will notice that he was awarded the Defence medal to begin with and then this was withdrawn. This was because you needed to complete one years service in an active front overseas and he was in India from late July 1942, but died in Rangoon Jail on 19/06/43 and so just failed to qualify. Service records would certainly answer some of your questions. Steve.
Given what Steve and Owen have said it could well make sense that he saw service elswhere prior to WW2........ do you know what Regiment he was in?
I really do not think he was in service prior to WW2. He was only 20 at the beginning of the war. I think this picture was taken just after joining?
