Sapper Ronnie Hurst is a post-WW2 casualty. He is therefore commemorated on the AFM. This is the link to his page on the AFM website :

We lost my new roommate at Crossmaglen on 17th May 1972, a quiet lad, Spr Ron Hurst had only been with us a week or so when he was shot dead working on a sanger. A Corporal was also shot and injured trying to rescue him. We were about the same age so he would have been 72 this year 2018. RIP Ron.

I was thinking of Ron today at the service on the Hoe as I do every year. Ron had the Bunkbed below mine in Dillon then moved off with 1 Tp to Crossmaglen. I was doing my HGV course would you believe delivering stores for a new sangar, I think, to this site with my instructor Pete Buick. Had not really got to know Ron he was indeed a quiet man as we shared a locker I helped to pack up his kit. RIP Ron, I will never forget.

I did my basic training with Ron Hurst at 1TRRE 87 training party in 1968. Good guy, good sense of humour - especially on one trip to the launderette in Cove. He was the first sapper to die in Northern Ireland at the hands of the Provisional IRA. Always remembered.
