Enjoyed reading the Hoodless surname meaning. Only one born Scotland with that as a first name, but 58 births post 1855 with the surname Hoodless.

I would like to say I am very grateful to learn more about 2649264 Lance Serjeant Hoodless Robinson’s service during the war.

I would also like to shed some light on the origins of his unusual first name.

I am currently researching my wife Julia's family tree. Her 3rd great grand father Christopher Robinson married Isabella HOODLESS in Bowness-on-Solway, Cumberland (present day Cumbria) in 1827.

They had 11 children and, possibly having run out of ideas, named their youngest Hoodless (b. 1847) after his mother’s family name - not too uncommon in those days.

Hoodless married Jane Knox in 1867 in Morpeth, Northumberland. They also had 11 children and, perhaps unsurprisingly, named their second youngest son Hoodless. Their youngest son, John William (b. 1883), is my wife’s great grandfather.

Four of Hoodless and Jane’s children: Isabella (married name Nicholson), Christopher, Andrew and John William also named a son Hoodless (now heading up the name charts in Northumberland) i.e. 4 cousins named Hoodless, 3 of them Hoodless Robinson! (hope they didn't go to the same school)

It is Christopher’s son Hoodless who joined the Royal Northumbrian Fusiliers and attained Lance Serjeant, following in his father’s footsteps. Christopher made Lance Serjeant but was medically discharged in 1915, with good character, after only 79 days service.

Incidentally, John William’s son 7519257 Corporal Christopher (Kit) Robinson RAMC (Lance Serjeant Hoodless’s cousin) was killed in action on 29th July 1944 during the Normandy break-out operations [possibly attached to the 50th Northumbrian Infantry Division – but I’m not sure about this, any information would be gratefully received] He is laid to rest in the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Tilly-sur-Seulles.

OP may find some details of his Coldstream Guards service in the CG records released by FMP since this topic was started several years ago.

    Gavin or Paul,

    Welcome aboard.

If you search using the forum's simple search option (top right) with his Service No. it will identify a few other threads here, in particular this one, which includes the location's spelling: Greiz (Friedhof) Thuringen - grave/cemetery photo request Note the request for an update from his regimental association - separate PM sent to him..

It always helps to add the CWGC entry: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2767006/hoodless-robinson/

Ravrick who you cite and seek help from has not logged in fro a few months. I will send him a Private Message (PM) to return and view the latest posts.

    PM explanation

If you hover over the name of the member in their avatar it will show a new text box and within is the date of their last logged visit. Some members "flag" their interest in a thread, which means they get a system alert. Once you have posted five times - a measure to stop spam - you can send a private message (PM) to members using 'Start a private conversation' accessed via your avatar. Such messages depend on their email given at registration is still valid. You can receive and reply to a PM already.
