Astrid, here is his record info re: POW. He was captured same place and time (my GF says May 30, 1940) as my Grandfather, also in the 4th OBLI.

    First Name: W. J.
    Last Name: Nash
    Rank: Private
Regt / Unit: Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry
    Soldier Number: 5381836
    Pow: Yes
    POW Number: 11501
    Camp: Stalag XX-B
    Camp Location: Malbork, Poland

You should get his Liberation Report if he completed one. Several people on here go to KEW and can copy it for you, Drew5233 is one, send him a PM.
Order his service records as well, they take a year and cost £30 but are worth it.
Stalag XXa then to XXb follows the same path my grandfather took, liberation report told me what work camps he was in and during what time, I was lucky in that he gave some detail. Stalag XXB would be his main camp, he could have been at a work camp 100's of miles away from there for part or lots of the time doing farming, mining, labour, road building or whatever else they wanted done.

Here's a link with info on getting Liberation reports, service records etc

My grandfather was captured May 30, 1940 at Cassel. He was with 4th OBLI, Company B. 2 Glosters were deployed around Cassel with OBLI. They evacuated Cassel evening of the 29th after the "leave now" message didn't get through the day before. My grandfather was caught in a farmer's field with a group of other OBLI guys. When they left Cassel it was dark and the group ended up getting separated and most were captured. Can't remember for certain but I think only a handful made it to Dunkirk.

I have attached a map showing the deployments, and a document which is from CASSEL May 1940 that seems to indicate some of the Company's were under heavy attack 27th/28th just outside of Cassel.

Transcription of the 4th OBLI War Diary Jan - June 1940.

Here's an interesting item for you from the diary, on Feb 10th, 1940 your father had a bath at Ostricourt, France. Then again so did the rest of the battalion. :D

I love war diary's, they are dry and boring, but items like that make me chuckle.

    Hi
My father (Pte Dennis Gutteridge from Kidmore End, 4th OBLI, B Company) captured at Watou on May 30th and sent to Lamsdorf. I'm writing a novel based loosely on his notebooks, but absolutely nothing written about how he got there and how he got to a small farm on Bavaria in 1945.....any info very welcome indeed.

Hi I am trying to trace any body who had relations in XX-B My father in law John Hathaway of Queen Victoria Rifles now KKRS was captured near Dunkirk in 1940 and marched to Poland to camp XX-B. He spoke of his times working on a farm where he and a few comrades killed a pig.He also mentioned Sam Kidd as a fellow prisoner. He finally escaped just before the end of the war with a couple of comrades reaching England at the end of the war.I would like to hear from anybody who may have had relations in the camp.I have his prisoner tags which Read, KR. GEF.Lager .Thorn .

Hi Barry, here is the POW info on him:

    First Name: J. A.
    Last Name: Hathaway
    Rank: Bugler
Regt / Unit: Kings Royal Rifle Corps
    Soldier Number: 6895570
    Pow: Yes
    POW Number: 20893
    Camp: Stalag XX-A
    Camp Location: Torun, Poland

Here is some info on Stalag XX-A

Check my signature for a link to tips and research hints to help you out. I would order his Liberation report first, then submit a request to the International Red Cross and also order his soldiers records. How to order these is in that links in my sig.

Hi Carol, your father likely fought with my Grandfather (Ronald Jackson, 4th OBLI, B coy) captured May 30, 1940 at Cassel, France.

    First Name: D.
    Last Name: Gutteridge
    Rank: Private
Regt / Unit: Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry
    Soldier Number: 5384413
    Pow: Yes
    POW Number: 14937
    Camp: Stalag 344
    Camp Location: Lambinowice, Poland

The Bavarian farm was likely a work camp attached to his main POW camp, my grandfather was on a cheese farm by Elbing, Poland.

Here's a list of known Lamsdorf work camps:
    Lamsdorf Work Camps | Powvets

There is a map attached to a post in this thread showing where they were deployed, check it out (post #25 in this thread) and a transcribed war diary for the OBLI Jan - Jun 1940 in post # 26 in this thread).

Order his liberation report ( takes a week or two, lots of good info if he completed one and was detailed, the farm will likely be listed), submit a request to the International Red Cross (takes ~12 months) and order his service records (takes ~12 months). Info on how to do this is in the link in my signature.

    For Barry2,

If you find the Stalag XXA thread and look at post 34, you will see a picture of Sam Kydd ( L/Cpl in the Queen Vic Rifles) with my father at Stalag XXA. I have also posted details of Sam's book on there, "For You the War is Over", which may mention your father.

Hi, I have just joined this group as I am also doing research on behalf of the family of a POW at stalag XXB
What I/we are trying to establish is the manner or his death whilst in captivity.
His name was Private John Lowerson Service No. 4454443 9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry
POW No. 6929 died 15 April 1945 and is buried in the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Berlin.
As we will be visiting the cemetery in August any info/help would be very much appreciated,
one story (unconfirmed) is he may have been shot trying to escape.
    Many thanks for any assistance

    Ken,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to say that the possibility that Pte John Lowerson may have been killed whilst trying to escape may be true.

The Judge Advocate General "Dead Victim" cards in file series WO353/18 at the National Archives has two cards which read:

    " Lawerson (sic), John 6929

22/110 Ill treatment PsW Wallenburg Jan/Mar '45 + shooting on march to Falkbindt"

( I'm not certain about "Falkbindt", the hand-writing is a little difficult to interpret )

Another card in the same file reads:

    " Lowerson, Pte ( PW No 16929 ) (sic)

    22/110 March Stalag XXB to Gossa (?) 23 Jan to 26 Apr 45. A/n ( above-named ) died on route of march at Schadwalde, 15 Apr 45' "

File WO 311/214 has the description " Ill-treatment of POWs on march from Stalag 22B (sic), Willenburg, Germany" and " Former reference in its original department MD/JAG/FS 22/110"

If you cannot get to Kew in time before your impending visit you could ask Lee (PsyWarOrg) or Andy ( Drew5233) if they can help you obtain a copy of WO 311/214. They would also tell Kew admin that there may be a typing error in the file description.

The file should contain further information.

    Good hunting.

    John

I would be interested in getting a copy of my Grandfathers liberation report if possible.
How do I go about getting it?
According to to his military records he was prisoner 9144 George Rose held at Stalag XXA.
I would be very interested in what he did whilst incarcerated, no one in the family seems to know.
