Hi I have just found (yesterday in fact) an old letter sent by my Grandad to his cousin during the Burma Campaign. He used to tell me old stories about his time against the japenese but we never had his service number until now and it appears at the top of the letter. His name was Private Norman George Ryder of B company 10th batt of the Gloucester Reg and it also says on the top part of the letter "India Company". This letter has facinated me and is dated 8th may 1944. Here begins my journey to try and discover more about where he went and what he did. Fortunatly living in Gloucester myself I have access to the museum which I will have to visit very soon. My Grandad died a few years ago and I would just love to know alot more about what he did because he was so proud! Hope to discover some other insights on here. Stacey
Hi Stacey and welcome to the forum. If you can get to the National Archives in London you can view/copy his battalions war diaries. I've listed them below for you, the first two and based in the UK and the last three are in the Far East: WO 166/4296 10 Gloucestershire Regiment. 1940 July - 1941 Dec. WO 166/8696 10 Gloucestershire Regiment 1942 Jan.- June WO 172/2511 10 Gloucestershire Regiment 1943 Apr.- Dec. WO 172/4881 10 Gloucestershire Regiment 1944 Jan.- Dec. WO 172/7632 10 Gloucestershire Regiment 1945 Jan.-Dec. Good luck with your search Andy
Thanks Andy I think that will be something to think about in the future, I am just seeing what else I can possibly find on the internet..... so far not much except going round in circles
Hi Stacey and welcome to the forum. Good luck with your research. You can start with this http://www.britishmilitaryhistory.co.uk/aqadmin/media/uploads/4e062d76ea893_36%20Indian%20Infantry%20Division.pdf There is also a book written by one former member of B Coy, 10th Glosters, "From Private to Trooper back to Private" by Geore Coulthard. You won't find there to much details about battalion services in Burma (maybe some 30 pages) but it have couple of company's group photos (unfortunately without names). Regards Enes
Stacey, welcome, There is a lot of information posted by Englandphil on this forum, back in 2009. Click this link: War Diary, 10th Bn., Gloucestershire Regiment Mike
Done. Welcome to the forum. Have merged a couple of threads you've posted on as they were both about the same battalion etc. Sticking to one thread would be best. 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment Good luck. Operational Reports for action in Burma 1943 - 1946
