    Hi,

Im new to this site and hope you may be able to help me find some information. My grandfather Pvt Hayden Glenville Jones 5884711 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment is buried at Maroeuil and died on 23rd May 1940.
Would really appreciate any information that anyone has for this Regiment for the month of May? In particular events leading up to and including the 23rd

    Many thanks

    Hi Tommy,

I've moved your post to it's own thread to attract more attention and attract Rich Payne who has your grandfathers units war diary. So I'll hold fire for the moment.

Do you have any pictures you can share?

    Regards
    Andy

I'll try to get on to this later. Unfortunately I have to be a parent's evenings at two different schools this evening so it's going to be a juggling act.

Tommy, your Grandfather is listed in the roll of honour in Wallis's "A History of the 58th". I'll post a copy here and attach some extracts (with a map) from Jervois' "A History of the Northamptonshire Regiment" on the existing thread which Sol linked to.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we'll be able to identify which company he was with but the published history gives quite a good idea of what was going on.

Sorry for the poor scan, It's always a problem with these old books. It might be better to try a photograph in daylight.

    Rich,

This is great. Many thanks for your time sir, really appreciate your help. Is there any way i could potentially find his company? Would it possibly be in his service records as im just waiting to receive these?

They only list Battalions in the Service Records. Every now and then in unit diaries you get a nominal roll that may break down into Company's.

I'm wondering if he might be listed in a missing file at Kew - I've got a few for other battalions and they occasionaly mention Companies if memory serves me well.

Drew's suggestion of 'missing' reports may be the best option here. I rather 'cherry-picked' the diary. It does include a full roll of officers and senior NCOs are mentioned now and then.

There may be something in the Service records if they retained correspondence or medical details but it's not likely.

Sadly, we're researching all this twenty years or so too late as at that time there would have been a good chance of finding some personal recollections.

    Was your Grandfather a pre-war regular ?

Had a feeling that it would only be the battalion Andy. I will keep digging and hopefully get some success

    Thanks

The missing file at the National Archives for 2 Northamptons is - WO 361/64

Rich are you aware of this file - WO 166/4474? I thought it a bit odd as it is listed again almost identically in WO 167

Just a thought Tommy, did the family keep any letters home from France ? Envelopes can be a great source for this sort of thing.

I wish i had started this a bit sooner too Rich as I would of perhaps received some better info from relatives that are sadly no longer with us.

No, he wasnt a pre-war regular as he was only 17 when he died

If he was only 17 he maybe mentioned at in the Bn Diary. I have read in some of I Corps Standing Orders soldiers listed by name and unit who were under age and had to be sent home. For a other rank to be mentioned by name and battalion at Corps level is quite something so he may get amention at Company level in the Bn Diary- I wonder why he never made it home?

Ah yes, I'd been looking at several casualties and had mixed him up with a married man. I see that according to CWGC, he was indeed 17. Have you verified his age elsewhere ? It is very young to have been with an infantry battalion.

He certainly started a family early if the age is correct.
