Many thanks Spidge. A tragic end for such a distinguished officer. I can understand however why the LAA unit in question was a bit trigger happy. They had been handled very roughly by the Axis air forces in the preceding week.

I have some additional info now which makes this look like pilot error, rather than LAA being triggerhappy.

Spidge, have you ever got the additional info?

The standing orders were for friendly aircraft to approach at 6,000 ft from the NE and circle the oasis in an anti-clockwise direction.

W/C Bowman did not comply with this and fired no recognition signals.

If Bowman had been made aware of standing orders is not clear to me due to subsequent action as a result of Court of Inquiry..

Subsequent orders were given to AA crews to confirm identification of probable hostile aircraft before engaging.

Thanks for the additional info Ross. Do you have a copy of the Court of Inquiry report?

No, but any findings and salient comments from any Court of Inquiry ( Form 412) are always transferred onto the Form 1180 which can be obtained from the RAF Museum, Hendon.

Works for all FA - Flying Accidents where a C of I took place, if the Form 412 has been destroyed over the years you will always get the summary on F1180s.
