Sorry, it was I that raised the "N" in the brevet. Thanks for correcting my assumption this might have been available in 1941, when you have comprehensively shown that not to be the case. I won't ask reg to strain his eyes to see if it's an "O".

I have had a close look at the photos dated 1941 and the letter on the half wing brevet is indistinct, It could be a 'B' 'S' or an 'E' but definitely a single letter with the laurel wreath, not an observers brevet as they were a different style without the laurels. The 'O' was attached to the half wing unlike other brevets.

    See attached: Observer brevet RAF.jpg

The photo looks as though it was taken on Longstone Bridge on the river Trent , Trent Brewery, Millgate demolished 1952 is in the background now replaced by Tannery Wharf ( newish building top right ). R1606 claimed by Oblt Egmont Prinz zur Lippe-Weissenfeld ( 12th victory ) 5./NJG2 , IJsselmeer east of Medemblik ( area code Hering ) at 00.41. He got another Wellington at 01.20 in the North Sea 10 km west of Alkmaar
