So, it was Keith Park who masterminded the air defence of Britain from his headquarters at Bentley Priory! You learn such a lot from prestige TV progs. Has Hugh Dowding finally been airbrushed from history? Sturmoviks all over again! What else did they get wrong?

However, it was worth it just to hear the veterans.

    Regards,
    David

RAF Hornchurch is featured at the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, Rapier Close, Purfleet-on-Thames.

It is a very interesting place to visit for artefacts from both world wars - housed in the remaining gunpowder magazine on the north bank of the Thames. Purfleet was, of course, a military garrison of which one notable feature was still there when I visited a couple of years ago - The Purfleet Ranges. It had its own rail station on the line which has now become the Eurotunnel link, I believe. In September/October 1914 the ranges were used to accommodate some of Kitchener's new army until the marshy ground became too wet for their tents!

In more recent times the ranges were used by the Metropolitan Police and the waste tip near to the Thames is a familiar feature of TV crime programmes!
