My Father died a few years ago, and since then I have wanted to find out more about what he did and where he was - I have finally found his release booklet....

I have his Army Number (7647380 - RJ Payne (SGT)

The papers list him as ST/MT/I as trade, and listing his unit as 11 (OHIL) MT Group RAOC.

My father didn't talk too much about the war, and now I wish I had asked much more !!!

Could anyone tell me what the abbreviations are, and where to start looking?

    Many thanks.

Just had a look in a raoc history and the only abbreviations that match is mt= mechanical transport.

You could apply for his srvice records, they would have much more info.

Hello and welcome to the forum-Units like this are notoriously hard to research from a war diary point of view. I've had a quick search and could only find one close match covering Dec 41 to July 42 and I'm not overly convinced it's the same unit.

As Steve has suggested above I would apply for a copy of his service records-It's highly unlikely he was with that same unit throughout the war anyway and the records will tell you all of his units and when he was with them.

    Regards
    Andy

It can take up to a year to recieve service records, but they are well worth it, it will tell you which units he wsd attached to , where and when he was with them.
