I’m trying to track down the RASC unit my grandfather served with. I’ve been in touch with the MOD/Army Personnel Centre about accessing his records but they have said they are unable to locate his file. I’m now at a total loss as to how to find out any further information. Here is the information I have: T/11262269 RSM Peter Johnstone I have his original Army Form Med 50A, a letter from RASC records dated 1948 concerning a Parchment Warrant in respect of his service as a WO1 (RSM). I know he went on to join the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) TA and served as a WO2. Unfortunately he died when I was 5 and he never spoke of his war service to my late father. I’m hoping someone can shine any light on this for me! Thanks Ewan
Enlisted RA in 1941 (forget the prefix letter) Looks like he joined the Pioneers(?) in Feb 1944. Attestation page below. Kyle
Ewan I have read your first post but am still going to ask, did you actually apply for his service records? - the link to the forms is here - Request records of deceased service personnel if they cannot find them they will not cash the money, so effectively there is nothing to lose. I am just wondering about trying a second time for his records?? TD
Yes I applied, sent all the relevant information away plus the cheque and it was all returned. The chap from the personnel centre was really helpful, tried a good number of times with variations on his number and name but alas he drew a total blank.
No I haven’t Steve, didn’t even know he would have been listed in it! Do you know what section to look under? Ewan
Hi, Could you give us some more info ? Birth/ death year, did he have a middle name, place of birth ? Graham.
Hi, Apologies if I’ve got it wrong but my understanding is that RSM “promotions” (appointments by Royal Warrant) are listed in LG. You just need to do a name search and look at dates around that shown in the 1948 letter - if it gives a date of promotion you can be more precise. Steve
Hi Graham, Peter was born 15.3.1915, in Glasgow. He died 17.2.1988 in Glasgow. He didn’t have any middle names Ewan
