I have a copy of my Fathers War Record for WW2.

He served with Anti Aircraft Regiments.

He did his training at 6th AA Divisional Training Depot then 49th LAA Regt R.A. Part II then 144th "Z" Bty R.A.

The Last posting is the one I am having trouble with see image attached

Any assistance appreciated  View attachment dads regiment.doc

As an ex 49th LAA man myself, see dates in my signature, I may be able to help but I cannot open your .doc file.

Why not copy and paste his details into a further response ?

@ Lesley: Apart from your first '4' and consequent date, I agree but I've nothing to fill the resultant void just now.

@ David: As we're clearly struggling, can you please give us more context - at least the column headings and the whole row in question for avoidance of doubt? A whole-page image, with only unduly-sensitive bits redacted if need be, would seem best - so long as it's at least as readable as your initial sample. Nor would it hurt for you to state exactly where your doubt lies ...

Thoughts on our current 'key hole' sample:
    • Apparently it's from the first 2 columns of a statement of service - respectively entitled "No. of Part II Order or other Authority." and "Unit." if I'm right - so I'd not expect a date here (despite the apparently-contrary initial "1-10-40")
    • The part transcribed by Lesley seems to have all been written in/by the same hand - strongly suggesting that any '4' in the 1st column should look much more like the very different pair in the 2nd
    • The very-evident smudging reinforces my 'same hand' deduction but may also be disguising horizontal elements such as those in support of Alan's 'E' idea
    • The questionable '4', with its more horizontal cross-bar carrying only a token upright at best, could therefore easily be a '+' (as read by Alan) but I can't see the sense of that if I'm right about the column headings - hence my request for those and the rest of the row to assist (esp. anticipated 3rd 'record of all casualties' column elaborating on the 1st)
    Steve

PS (@ Ron): Don't know why David's Word document should give you grief as it seems to be in time-honoured 'Word 97-2003 Binary File Format' - perfectly OK with both my antiquated Word 2000 and Elsie's very modern iPad as it happens! Or maybe your problem is like this intermediate Vista gripe fielded by the Microsoft Office forums - Word File will not Open using windows explorer? Even that, though, shouldn't stop you more laboriously opening the file from within either Word or M$'s free Word Viewer if pre-launched for the purpose.
