Would you be willing to share the photo for Trooper Ronald Eric Martin, 2nd Derbyshire, BANNEVILLE-LA-CAMPAGNE? He was my great uncle, it's been many years since we visited the grave and somewhere along the way the photograph we took has been lost.

Thank you very much indeed Paul, I'm extremely grateful for the photograph.

We don't have any photographs of Ronald, his mother emigrated to the USA along with her daughter, a GI bride, in 1946. It seems that she took with her all the photographs and following her death no-one knows what happened to them. Ronald was born on 21st August 1923, at 19 Clarence St, Liverpool. He had one brother, a year older, and 5 sisters. My grandfather was very close to his brother and took his death badly, he rarely spoke about him and so we have almost no first hand accounts of Ronald.

The events on the day Ronald died are described in the book, The Second Derbyshire Yeomanry (1939-1945), by Capt. A. J. Jones. With great difficulty I recently managed to acquire a copy (there aren't many copies about and military collectors seem willing to pay a lot for them). Anyway, the following information and quotes come from the book.

In the three days immediately prior to the 12th, 'A' squadron had pushed up to St. Silvain encountering Tiger tanks, mined roads and heavy artillery. On the 11th it seems both sides had stopped to regroup. It's mentioned that they were holding back their own armour at this point to avoid it "[being] frittered away in frontal assaults on strongly held positions."

"On 12th August, a squadron was called for to storm the ridge running South of St. Silvain, from which position the enemy had good observation for his own artillery. At about six p.m. 'B' Squadron were sent in and then followed a spirited action in which the squadron vainly endeavoured to carry out it's mission. On troop did, in fact, make a temporary lodgement on the crest of the ridge but the enemy's fire was too hot to withstand and the troop were forced to withdraw, having sustained twenty casualties, including four men killed* and three missing."

"It soon became apparent that the enemy were determined to hold on, regardless of cost. Their long range guns came into action and portions of shells recovered were identified as 29 c.m. long range shells being fired from the area of Le Harve - some thirty miles away."

The book jumps ahead to the 14th describing how 'B' squadron were then attached to the 144 Reg. R.A.C. to act as a recon screen for their heavy tanks.

P.S. Derby Cathedral has on display a memorial book which lists the names of all those members of the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry who were killed in action. Should anyone be interested in seeing it, the verger will open the case on request. It doesn't list anything more than a name and date of death, if that, but it's the only memorial to the men of the regiment as a whole that I'm aware of.

I think the work you have all done here is amazing & highly commendable. I know from my own experience how much comfort I felt being able to see the last resting place & memorial to my loved ones, even if it is only in a photograph. Thank you so much for providing that service to so many families!!

Would it be possible to obtain a picture of the headstone or memorial for Trooper Arthur Harry Newell of 61st Regt Reconnaissance Corps at the Bayeux War Cemetery or any other information relating to him you may hold. I am asking on behalf of his eldest daughter Barbara who was only 3 when he died on the beaches (age 28)on 06/06/1944. All she has to remind her of her father is one picture of him & the letter written to her mother by his CO after his death. Her mother, Arthurs' wife is currently still alive but Barbara(now 74) & one of her sisters(also Arthurs daughter) hope to visit his grave in France after their mum passes. His wife did go on to marry again & have further children & her 2nd husband brought all the girls up as his own, which is one of the reasons (out of respect) they haven't yet made the visit to Arthurs grave.

Having seen the picture of the memorial stones of my grandparents & aunt she asked if I thought we might be able to find her dads & so here I am.

May I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your time & help.

    Kind regards

Whilst researching my partners father Wilfred Hughes-Brian Coldstream guards i came across some information on his brother Corpl Norman Hughes-Brian of the 43rd Reg Recce who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the 09/08/1944 and is laid to rest at Banneville-la-campagne. I have attached a couple of photos, one of Norman and one of the original grave marker. I have some letters that i will photograph and add when completed.

    Hi Paul
This is an amazing and respectful piece of work. I am trying to compile a spreadsheet of all who served with 61st Reconnaissance Regiment that I can find any mention of. May I add the information form your list that's missing from mine and publish with a page on the Chotie Darling website?
Also, do you have information on the age of those who died (I have included this on the spreadsheet where I can find it).
    Best wishes
