here are 2 photos of my father am looking for any info on him all i know he served in africa, italy and maybe india? his name was gilbert tyson born 1924 paisley scotland am grateful for any help on the free history sites he does not exist. i belong to the ex forces site fb and they said try here , one said he seems to wear tank slides ?
Hi, Have you not considered applying to MOD Glasgow for his service file? Service number not required - although members may turn one up from his RA attestation register entry on FMP (or is it Ancestry?) - but you do need a death certificate. MOD will search on full name and DOB only. Cost £30. Good Luck. Steve Y
It seems Tyson is a 'borders' name, quite a few in NE England as well as Scotland - hoping for further info from other members to help out TD
your very helpful thank you would you know what the "tank slides" are never heard of them some one on the fb says he may have been commissioned here is the quote The later photos look like he is wearing a tank slide on his epaulettes could have been commissioned at some stage
Hi I've already searched the RA attestation database in findmypast and found no trace of Gilbert Tyson. There is a possibility that he served in India. Could that explain his absence? Gus
4390649 Gnr G Tyson enlisted The Green Howards transferred Royal Artillery ,captured 1944 (Italy? unconfirmed) held Stalag XIIA no PoW number listed May be a possibility? Kyle
Kyle - you mean this guy UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: G Tyson Rank: Gunner Army Number: 4390649 Regiment: Royal Artillery Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: XII-A Camp Location: Limburg, Baden-Württemberg Record Office: Royal Artillery (Field) Record Office, Foots Cray, Sidcup, Kent Record Office Number: 5 TD
Hi Kyle I found him too. According to the casualty lists 39-45. 4390649 Gunner G Tyson, was with 1st (Para) Air Landing Light Regiment, who were taken POW at Arnhem in September 1944. POW database says he was imprisoned in Stalag XII-A in Limburg, Baden-Württemberg and casualty lists 39-45 says he was released in 1945. Squipper mentions that his father went to Africa and Italy and 1st (Para) Air Landing Light Regiment were in Oran 16 May 43 and Italy in Sep 43. If he was in the Green Howards first that would certainly explain his absence from the RA attestation database. I wasn't convinced this was the man before, but maybe it is. Gus
to all of you thank you very kindly. i hope it is him, he did not say much if he was at Arnhem that would make me proud of him. no way of knowing if it is him .i know that he stayed at his mothers house when on leave they moved to Hull maybe pre war where i was born and live . i have looked on a site there were a few G Tysons on it but which one would be him if only i had his service number
Hi, Have you looked for him on the 1939 Register - pre war mini census conducted to enable issue of National Identity cards? In view of possible POW link you should consider Red Cross enquiry when they reopen 1st Oct 2017. http://ww2talk.com/index.php?posts/748569/ Steve Y
Squipper Its interesting you mention you were born in Hull, as searching for a Gilbert Tyson born in 1924 in Ancestry gives me only 1 result: England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: Gilbert Tyson Birth Date: abt 1924 Date of Registration: Mar 1966 Age at Death: 42 Registration district: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Volume: 2a Page: 361 What was your mothers maiden name, year of marriage etc, it helps to trace the connections as they may have been transcribed wrongly. Also can you confirm or not if the details above fit your fathers death?? TD edited to add: What was you fathers birth date -
Checked Scotlandspeople website and there is only one entry for a Gilbert Tyson and that was for one born in 1923. Birth was registered in the district of Old or West Kilpatrick. Only births up til 1916 are viewable on line for a few credits, anything afterwards you need to order the birth certificate direct from Scotlandspeople. The birth cert reference number is 501/478.
So he died in Hull 1966 - if you obtain a copy of his death certificate then you can apply for his service records Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK Marriage info : Name: Violet M Mattinson Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1949 Registration district: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Spouse: Gilbert Tyson Volume Number: 2a Page Number: 345 I assume you have a copy of this and it should provide some details of your fathers date of birth and maybe place - or is that where the info came from in post 1? TD
no i don't have one yet have applied t hull city council for one, the info is all that i know is when we were young he took us to paisley to see his relatives saying he was from paisley. his army info is from when he showed me his medals africa star/italy star and 2 silver ones would they be gen service and mil medals there was a third star i think maybe indian star or burma not to sure was about 13 yrs old
Do you know roughly when Gilbert left Scotland? I don't see him on the 1939 ID register on FMP. Scotlands '39 register isn't searchable on line. It costs £15 for a look up on the Scottish '39 register and is only done by individual name (i.e. the £15 wouldn't list all the individuals staying at the same address in '39). You would need to supply his death cert. to them also along with date of birth. If they cannot find someone they will charge a £5 admin fee and return the remaining £10. Did you have any aunts & uncles? Is see three other births in the Old Kilpatrick area with the surname Tyson.
Meant to add Kilpatrick and Paisley are only 9 miles apart. Kids may well have been born in Old Kilpatrick, but resided in Paisley. You could register births in both areas back then.
Squipper Once you have his service record that will tell you his true story, and it can be expanded upon with the use of War Diaries and members of this site, - apply for them and lets see what comes back. Re medals Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility - GOV.UK - again his records will show you what he was eligible for and if they were issued. Sometimes it has been found that all the medals someone has are not necessarily those that were issued to them, if you follow my drift. TD
sorry don't know when he left scotland and do not know any any aunts & uncles only went once when he took me . will wait for marriage and death certificates then take it from there will keep in touch with you all. alan
