Hello everyone, I have just joined this forum so please forgive me if the information I am looking for has already been discussed elsewhere - please point me towards any helpful posts! I am researching my grandfather who was a member of RAOC / REME / IEME from 41-46. Specifically I am looking for any information regarding the REME (later IEME) base at Chaklala. I understand this was a repair facility at the Rawalpindi base which also hosted a Parachute training base. Could anyone shed any light on what my grandfather could have been doing as part of Workshop Company 93 at the Chaklala base between 1942 and 1944. He was qualified as FV/MV/AFV III which I understand to be Fitter of Military and Armoured Fighting Vehicles. Also would appreciate any info regarding the following acronyms: TOSYR (in?) C E and RKHAK Thank you for reading,
Hi Timmo81, Welcome to the forum. In regards the two acronyms you have posted. It would be helpful for forum members to know the context in which they are written presumably on your grandfather's service records. It might be an idea to scan them onto this thread. TOS normally stands for Taken on strength, as in joining a unit. RKHAK looks to me like a draft recognition code for a unit transferring from one place to another or overseas and does not actually stand for anything as such. These have been discussed on the forum before here: Draft recognition codes.
For background information, there are a few are a few references to Chaklala on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Rawalpindi Rawalpindi - FIBIwiki Cheers Maureen
Hi bamboo43, Thank you for the reply. Your interpretation makes sense as RKHAK was listed on a posting list. Unfortunately both attempts I tried to upload an image failed as the filesize was too large. I shall try another means. I've made some enquiries with the REME museum so hope to get some info there. My grandfather spent two years attached to the IEME (not uncommon apparently) which probably correlates with the gaps in the record. Maureen, - thank you for suggestion. rgds, Tim
