REME or Not?

I was always told that my Grampa, George Cormack, was in the REME's during WW2. However I can't seem to find anything online about his service. I want to write to the Government to ask for his records but I was wondering if anyone could check his cap badge first to see if they recognise it as a REME badge please or whether I'm completely wrong!?

Is this something you can do?

Not REME in the Photo, looks like London Scottish, he is wearing a Glengarry which would make him part of a Scottish Regiment

More info on the London Scottish London Scottish (regiment) - Wikipedia - it is entirely possible he also spent time with REME, men were moved about

    Hi,

You don’t have to specify a Regiment - or even an army service number - when you apply for an individual’s service record.

MOD will search for a service record on a full name and DOB only.

    Good Luck.

    Hi
Although the photo appears to show your grandfather in the London Scottish he could still have ended up in the REME. As it was only formed in October 1942 from an amalgamation of the RAOC (Royal Army Ordinance Corps) RASC (Royal Army Service Corps) Royal Engineers and Royal Signals, and from where unit drew most of it's personnel.
As in my father's case who enlisted into the Royal Artillery, transferred to the RAOC and then REME. Your grandfather may have started the war in the London Scottish but very well may have ended in the REME.
Obtaining his service records is the next step and then post them here where there are plenty of very knowledgeable WW2 experts who can advise.
Also check out my avatar which was the REME cap badge during the war.

Thank you all so, so much for your information and help, you have no idea how much I appreciate it. Grampa died when I was 11 and, like so many, never talked about things. The only thing he ever said was that he collected tanks to fix them.

I'm so excited to see what more I can find out and I will definitely share it here.

If that was the case then there's a good chance he was in the REME.
When you apply for his records be prepared for a wait as it does take some time before you receive them.

Is it the £30 for all his service records or do they only send bits and pieces? He died in 1989 so more than the 25 years I thought I saw on the Government website so am I right in thinking I'll get everything?

Have a look at the records posted by members in the service record sub forum to give you an idea of what MOD supply.

    Service Records

The main source of info is the Army Form B103 that lists a soldiers movements.

MOD don’t provide medical forms or details of disciplinary offences.
