Posting some info to remember my great-uncle Basil Theodore Haylock, who was shot down and killed on 03 June 1942 during a night time bombing raid over Germany.

Basil was 20 years old and an air gunner on a Wellington belonging to 57 squadron operating out of RAF Feltwell, Norfolk.

Details below are from the squadron records and detail the operation in particular with a couple of previous missions.

His aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Oberleutnant Werner Rowlin of 8/Njg four miles north of Gildehaus near Bad Benthem.

The crew are buried in the Reichswald forest CWGC cemetery.

I am also related to Basil Haylock and intend visiting the Guildehaus area to try and ascertain the actual crash site. We will also visit the site of their temporary graves in the Protestant Cemetery in Rheine and their final resting places in Reichswald.

Does anyone have any info on organisations that might have further details of the crash? I was thinking of local history groups, museums etc. I have approached the local authorities/Town Halls etc but so far have drawn a blank.

Also, what happened to the a/c wreckage? Would it have been recovered or simply left to decay?

We believe that X9787 came down in a "swamp" near some farm buildings. We believe this could be the Syen Venn area (shown on Google Maps) which is swampy and 4 miles north of Guildehaus. Many of the fields around that area are irrigated so the swamp could have been much larger with some land reclaimed since the war.

Hello, I've joined this forum to further my research into Wellington X9787 of 57 Squadron which crashed 6km north of Gildehaus whist returning from a raid on Essen June 3rd 1942. All crew were lost including my uncle Basil Haylock who was the rear gunner.
