December 2 1940 Bristol’s second big air raid started at 16 minutes past six and lasted until 11 o’clock. The Bishop’s Palace was completely burned out, and the Children’s Hospital, St. Michael’s Hill was hit, but luckily the staff were able to evacuate the children to the Homoeopathic Hospital, without injury. Welsh Back was hit and part of the Quayside demolished. Budgett’s large warehouse in Nelson Street, which had been damaged in a previous raid, was completely destroyed. The northern half of Portland Square was burned out, while in Rosemary Street the Dockland Settlement was destroyed. A large calibre bomb destroyed a wardens’ post in Dean Street, St. Paul’s, burying 13 people under the debris, and the police headquarters in Bridewell was hit. At Hill’s shipyard at Cumberland Road, the s.s. Bristol City was hit, Another bomb fell on W. D. & H. 0. Wills’ No.1 factory, damaging 10 machines, but production continued. Official casualty figures were 156 killed, 149 seriously injured, and 121 slightly injured, Rescue parties made 66 calls, from which they rescued 135 persons alive and recovered 117 bodies, In the first hour, 55 fires were reported - in all there were 167.
