    CL1 116th LAA and 92nd (Loyals) LAA,Royal Artillery

The personnel of X Troop were foreign citizens who had fled the Nazis to fight in the British Army, and as such they adopted Anglicized names to protect them against reprisals in the event of their capture; these names are included below in brackets. Under "Remarks" is the Commando unit to which they were attached in Normandy, where they served as translators. X Troop suffered severely; 44 men were deployed, 11 were killed and 16 either wounded or taken prisoner.

Guy, thank you for posting that. I've only just come across it - 5 years later! The chap in question, Ernst Lenel, was a great uncle of mine. I'm accompanying a school trip (including my daughter) to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we'll be paying a visit to the Commonwealth War Memorial in Bayeux so it's absolutely terrific to find a first-hand account of what went on.
