Pte REJ Smith was killed during the break-out from Mersa Matruh, an action every bit as daring as the breakout from the Gazala line two weeks earlier.

Once again the 50th (Northumbrian) Division were acting as rearguard for the 8th Army as it retreated and were in defensive positions near Mersa Matruh. They were hemmed in by the Axis forces and had to break-out.

The 69th Infantry Brigade, 50 Div, to whom the 6th Bn Green Howards belonged, planned to head south for the open desert, had the enemy to the east, a minefield in front, a ravine to the west and couldn’t go back north (as the enemy was also there), and whilst finding their escape had to run a 3 mile gauntlet of enemy fire, including shelling and anti-tank rounds.
