Stan was the wireless operator / front gunner.

Having done a bit of research I feel there is some doubt regarding the possible encounter with Hermann Sommer's night fighter. The german records show Sommer claimed 4 kills that night, 3 over Tollerton and Hucknall in Notts between 12:15 and 12:50 and a final report over Bircham Newton at 01:30. From what I can deduce the range of the JU88 night fighter would have given him 4 hours flying time and assuming his base was Gilze-Rijen he would have had to have returned there by 3am to avoid running out of fuel. The final distress call from the Wellington was received at 3:14am from somewhere over the North sea. Given that the german's flight path from Bircham Newton to Gilze-Rijen would have been a lot further north than the flight path between Mannheim and Waterbeach (that the Wellington should have been on), it seems doubtful whether the two planes would have come into contact.

That the Wellington went down in the north sea with all crew lost is undoubted, but what bought the plane down is I believe unanswerable.
