Researching a Gordon Highlander who doesn’t seem to exist...

Hi all, I’m trying to research my great grandad George McAllister McOmish (23/3/1917). I have a photo of him with a Gordon Highlanders cap on, aside from this I know nothing of his units/theatres/time served etc. He was at Dunkirk, apparently being listed as missing for 2 weeks with my great gran receiving a telegram only to discover he was back in the UK.
Multiple searches online have brought back nothing, so I’m wondering if he used a different name, or perhaps I’m being blind.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated, as I find it sad that nothing is known of him.

He was awarded the 39-45 star, war medal and France/Germany star. This is the only photo I have of him in uniform.

OK - well the first place of call is the MOD - Request records of deceased service personnel where you need to apply for his service records - if he exists and was in the Military during WW2 then he will have a record and that will tell you the bones of his story - to go any other route is ................... well silly, except of course if he really does not exist

Looks more like a Cameronians cap badge than Gordons. The deer antlers stick out above the wreath on the Gordons.

Cheers for the reply, I have the application ready but didn’t want to apply for the MOD to have no record of him. Think I’ll give it a shot though!

Brilliant Owen, I had always assumed it was the Gordon’s due to what I thought were antlers, just shows that a second pair of eyes always help!

If they cannot find a record then your fee will be returned - so no financial loss to yourself - at least that what I believe happens - give them a ring and ask, they are nice people
