    Thought just occurred to me:
    I thought Officers went to Oflags and ORs to Stalags. Did this apply to Army camps and was Sagan different as it was a Luftwaffe camp?

    Sad to hear of his passing and seemingly the last survivor of that camp too....

    RIP Richard Birtles - He is frequently mentioned in Great Escape literature and will not be forgotten for his part in the story. His daughter is right, he was lucky not to have actually escaped, I have researched just one of the 50 and this is what happened to him.
