    AIR CRASH VICTIM
    Anthony Blaikley, son of Mrs Blaikley, of Grey Roofs, was one of the crew of seven killed when a Lancaster crashed at North Luffenham, near Oakham, Rutland, on Monday. The plane had just taken off on a local routine flight and crashed on open ground near the aerodrome. Anthony had only left his home, after leave, the previous day.

    Many people in Burwash were sorry to learn that Bill Farley, as he was known locally, had been killed by enemy action. Forty-seven years of age, he was born at Burwash, and lost his wife about a year ago. At the time of his death he was a Wing Commander in the RAF. He had been serving in the Forces since 1914. he joined the Royal Sussex Regt and in 1916 obtained a commission in the Royal West Surrey Regt, being transferred to the RFC in 1918 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was the Editor of “The Planesman”.

    The funeral took place at St Bartholomew’s Church, Burwash, on Wednesday, the service being conducted by Sir Henry Denny, Bart. Flying Officer Hewitt and Adjutant of deceased’s unit represented the RAF. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and the bearers, firing party and a contingent of the RAF were in charge of PO Brett and Sergt Barnes. Fifteen Burwash Home Guards, under Platoon Commander Nicolls, were also in attendance.

    LATE S. H. NOAKES
    The funeral took place at Burwash Weald on Saturday of Samuel Henry Noakes, aged 32, of the RAF, who was killed by enemy action. He was a member of the well-known Noakes family, and his father and mother went to Canada several years ago. Sam was born at Mission Hill, Vernon, BC, but was brought to England as a baby. He had been in the Burwash Common Platoon of the Home Guard for a year and four months, and joined the RAF in October. He leaves a wife and four young children. A detachment of the Home Guard attended the funeral under Capt FS Gregory, others present being Sergt Russell, Volunteers Robertson, Isted, Eyres, A Beddington, MCW Gilliat and Section Leader Young. The bearers were Lance Corpl AH Sayers, HB Stowell, AA Suckling and F Crane, members of the Royal Canadian AMC, one of whom came from Vernon BC, near where deceased was born. Aeroplanes circled the graveyard during the interment and dipped in salute.

    SERGT-NAVIGATOR G L PETTITT OF BURWASH
    Another Burwash lad, Sergt-Navigator Geoffrey Leslie Pettitt, RAF, aged 20, has lost his life while on active service. He was the son of Mr and Mrs FR Pettitt, of Hill Crest, Rock Hill, Burwash Common. He attended Burwash Weald School and was in St Philip’s Church Choir. Later he went to Skinners’ School, Tunbridge Wells, and afterwards worked at Stonegate Co-operative Egg Station. He was in the Heathfield Flight of the ATC for two years and joined the RAF about two years ago.

    The funeral took place at St Philip’s Church, Burwash Weald, on Saturday, the coffin being draped with the Union Jack. Flight Commander Harrison, Warrant Officer WL Bourner, NCOs and Cadets from the Heathfield Flight of the ATC formed a guard of honour, and Sergts Russell and Ayers and Cpls J Kemp and C Parker, of the Burwash Common Home Guard, acted as bearers. Sergt Le Page RCA, was in charge of the squad which fired a salute over the grave.

    The Rev RF Richards conducted the choral service, Miss Jarvis being at the organ. The principal mourners were Mr and Mrs Pettitt, Mr Tyler, Mr and Mrs J Buckley, Miss Buckley, Mrs S Lusted, Mrs Sparrowhawk, Mr and Mrs T Pettitt, Mr and Mrs Erry, Mr and Mrs C Pettitt and Mr and Mrs B Pettit. Mr C Smith represented the Stonegate Co-operative Society and S.E. Farmers.
