I stumbled across this photograph at a recent Boot sale and as it was only a £1 I took it of the gentleman's hands.I am sure its of a RA unit but as its not my field of expertise I thought I would throw it over to you guys. All that is written on the back is Private Allen, not a lot to go on I know but thought it worthy of a post. Thanks Dave
Thng that stands out for me is how many are wearing spectacles. Never seen a unit photo with so many being worn. see chap back left? smoking a pipe. also chap in civvies in back row. seems a very informal unit. All the officers have medal ribbons too. Great War medals, I wonder?

This was my initial thought but didnt want to blurt it out load and make myself look a complete numpty
The thing that stood out for me was the use of Private when in the RA that should be Gunner. Am I right in saying it was Royal Artillery? I was only going going by the shape of the cap badge. It seems this picture is throwing more questions than answer well worth spending a pound on.
Hi Dave, Front row on left that looks like Martin Herford... Cheers Tom PS cya this week in your know where and John your right it is a woman...
Did RA have a Home Guard unit? This was my initial thought but didnt want to blurt it out load and make myself look a complete numpty Dave Home Guard units were used to man AA guns and i understand they did'nt like it much either. They do 'look' like a home AA unit as well. Best Rob

A woman indeed John. Looks like the woman has an ATS cap badge. The officers at the front all look a bit older than average. Goes with the comment about glasses. There were some Home Guard units doing HAA duties, but the cap badges look like they are RA.
Home guard HAA (and Z Battery) units were cap badged RA and wore the white lanyard. At least for a time, the cap badge and lanyard were highly prized by these part-timers.
The odd thing is that in the back row there seems to be a man in civvies. 8th from the left, white shirt, tie, and hatless.
