    Hi Jasem,

This photo was taken by another Member of this Forum whilst visiting Crete. I happen to have a copy of the history of the Northumberland Hussars and will see if there is more information about Frederick Gray.

    Regards,

    Rob.

    Hi Rob,

Any information would be much appreciated, thank you.

My mum, nan, and great-nan (as I called her!) visited Crete in the mid 60s, but my mum (Dawn) born in 1960 was very young & cannot remember the visit. As I say it's great to see the memorial is still in lovely condition, and Souda Bay looks beautiful. We will visit again as a family in the next couple of years I hope.

The family would love any info that was available on his deployment to Crete. It was a grim affair from the small amount I've read on the battle, and my nan (Valerie) always spoke of her disquiet at the details she had learned; but I never really wanted to ask many questions.

Thanks for your reply, and Kind Regards,

    Jasem

    For Jasem,

Bombadier Gray's death is mentioned in the book and the Roll of Honour for the Northumberland Hussars.

It may enable you to try and identify the area where he was killed in action. I hope you get the opportunity to get back to Crete again with your family.

    Kind regards,

    Rob

Roll of Honour - 130th (Lowland) Field Regiment RA - First Arakan Campaign

Not sure if this Roll of Honour would be of use in the project - I just found it in "Account of operations of 130th (Lowland) Field Regiment in the Arakan campaign 1942 Nov - 1943 May, by Colonel R. A. G. Nicholson" (National Archives Ref. CAB 106/23), which seems to be a private history typed up in 1943. It gives the name/rank/service number of the men killed, along with their Troop/Battery and the date/place/nature of the casualty along with next of kin information and addresses.

The cemetery has now been turned into a wild life park.
However I managed to find the original headstone.
