Hi, It seems I have missed one of the men off my Roll of Honour list, and unfortunately, the newspapers that I use to research the local guys have all gone to be scanned to be put online I'm looking for information on. I have his parents from CWGC records but any help on the event that would have led to his death would be appreciated Royal Marine William Jackson Service Number PLY/X 107655 Date of Death 06 06 1944 Regiment No 41 Royal Marine Commandos Buried Bayeux War Cemetery Grave Reference XI. UK, British Army and Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1730-1960 Name: William Jackson Event: Death Birth Date: 17 Jun 1923 Birth Place: Baguley, Cheshire. Death Date: 6 Jun 1944 Death Age: 20 Originally died at Lion sur Mer 41st Royal Marine Commando Memorial - Lion-sur-Mer - TracesOfWar.com TD https://www.dday-overlord.com/en/battle-of-normandy/cities/lion-sur-mer the No.41 RMC lost 140 soldiers (killed, wounded, disappeared or prisoners) in this first day, a loss rate close to 50%
On the Graves Concentration Report Form posted by TD, the cause of death is stated as 'K.A.S' rather than 'K.I.A'. This apparently means Killed At Sea, although the other doc in TD's post above gives 'France' as the place of death and 'At Sea' for other, non Commando casualties. Does this necessarily mean that he was killed while on board his landing craft, or is it a Navy thing to label all RM KIAs as KAS? The latter does not seems to hold, since other 41 RM Commando casualties are stated as KIA. Michel
Some strange things here. The casualty immediately above Mne W. Jackson on the Graves Concentration Report Form is Capt PTH Dufton, also listed as KAS, whereas he was killed during the assault on TROUT in Lion-sur-Mer, perhaps as the same time/place as Mne Jackson, as suggested by the same Report Number 21 AGp/ADGR/1513 for both casualties (last column). See 41 RM Cdo War Diary (already linked by CL1 above): No.41 (Royal Marine) Commando Might this mention of 'KAS' come from the fact that in the War Diary the location for 6 Jun 44 was 'At Sea'?
