Royal Navy sailors have performed the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace for the first time in the ceremony's 357-year history. Sailors perform Changing the Guard
Is there a specific reason why the RN has never done it? I would have thought they would have had first dibs being the 'senior service'.
Not sure Drew - probably due to that word tradition. The duty traditionally falls to one of the five Foot Guards Regiments from the Army's Household Division. The Navy will take over from the Coldstream Guards. 2017 is the year of the Navy. Regards Hugh
Odd one, haven't the RAF been doing it for a few years now along with other army regiments like RHA, RA ?
The Royal Marines have done it four times I think and also the RAF regiment have done it. Maybe everybody will get a shot at it from now on. Regards Hugh
The RAF have done it several times but I believe it was always the RAF Regiment. Likewise the Royal Marines have also mounted the Guard in the past. Tim
Australians have done it a few times. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/814684.stm Buckingham Palace rang to the brass band sounds of Waltzing Matilda on Saturday, as women took up sentry duty for the first time in history. HAC in 1938
I suspect that with so little money for fuel and spares, the Navy need to give their people something to do. F
Happy to read that the headline referred to Royal Navy Sailors and not Navy soldiers as some of out TV outlets do here in Vancouver sometimes. Once saw mention of army petty officers.
