Lieutenant D Kirkland RNVR and Lieutenant R H Saull RNVR, both HMS Odyssey carrying out bomb and mine-disposal work in Holland 1944/45, were killed at Rotterdam on 12 May 1945. At the time, they are believed to have been serving with NP 1747. Lieutenant-Commander G H Goodman, HMS Vernon, killed on 31 May 1945 near Den Haag, may also have been serving with NP 1747, but this has not been confirmed. They are commemorated in the Dutch EOD Museum at Soesterberg - with thanks to retired Dutch EOD Captain Antoon Meijers. Credit: Naval History site: Naval Party, Royal Navy, 1942-1991 by Ben Warlow

Lovely sentiment at the foot of his grave. Although according to the grave he had been serving on the minesweeper HMS Elgin, he was ashore when killed in a serious air raid on Portsmouth.

    Eric Smith.jpg

Eric had signed-up as Boy, 2nd class at 15, just weeks before the armistice in 1918.

Although his headstone records his ship as HMS Hood he obviously did not meet the same fate met by most of his shipmates – he had in fact been invalided from her in October 1940 with pulmonary tuberculosis. As a Leading Telegraphist on Vice-Admiral Somerville’s flagship he would nevertheless have had a ringside view of the building tensions at Mers el-Kébir on that fateful day.
