Hello: I'm hoping someone can fill in some history about the movement of the above troops from West Africa to Burma.

My father served in this regiment, training Nigerian troops and then eventually fighting in Burma. When I was quite young he told me about a trip from West Africa to Burma during which they stopped in East Africa to liberate an East African city (I can't recall if he named it), from the Italians, but having to withdraw to allow the South Africans to officially take the city. From his service records this journey would have taken place in mid 1944. He sailed from West Africa to Karachi on the "Highland Chieftain."

I can find nothing in any record that I've looked seen, including the History of the Royal West African Frontier Force (very heavy going), that references RWAFF fighting in East Africa as late as 1944. This makes me think that I've misunderstood the story - as I say, I was quite young when he told it - and that he was just detailing some of the earlier history of fighting by the RWAFF.

Can anyone clear up my confusion?

    Thank you

    HZL
