Funny enough, Tom, that's why I ignored the story at first. The Polish museum seems to discover so many halftrack chassis I've become a bit blase about ' em and assumed from the picture this'd be another.

Can anyone explain the following from one of my grandfathers letters dated 17/09/1944.I believe the location was in or around Calais. What was there purpose? I'm afraid I haven't been able to interpret all of the words....

"You read about Jerry’s robot tanks – small ones some time ago. Well some days ago we collected quite a number of them – I should have loved to have got one home for the kiddies – they are quite lovely little things just a little longer than that toy car you got for Alan and *** by batteries (car) and electric motors. But they would really make a glorious toy for a kiddie – They were controlled by a **** length of **** - but would have been quite easy to **** the steering on them."

    Thanks

    Simon

    You mean like these:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU2czr6K22o

    Purpose:
German Robot Tanks in WW2 - The Goliath Tank Buster (or Goliath Tracked Mine) was a remote controlled tank-shaped vehicle designed by WW2 German scientists. Packed with 75kg of explosives, to blow up tanks or buildings. The vehicle was guided by an engineer, and the explosives detonated.

was trawling through some TNA files and came across this one that might be of interest:

    Reference: HW 1/2635
    Description:
Southern Europe: 76th Panzer Corps reports success of German probable remotely-controlled tanks against Allied positions at Anzio/Nettuno bridgehead,

    Damned stylish.
Plundered rather shamelessly From Axis Track Services' Facebook Page (My apologies to them, but if they will go around showing such radical interior design flair, people will notice. Nerdish people, but we are people.):

The Goliath must have been an interesting novelty given the number of photos taken.

    Silly man.
    (I'm only jealous).

    Build from gokart/mower/scrap/ described here:
"Goliath" Mini Tank - DIY Go Kart Forum

    I'd missed your reply, Tim.
That is quite some heap, isn't it.
Made me wonder how often, if ever, they appear on the open market. Prices etc.
Fair few replicas seem to pop up, eg: Sd.Kfz.303 Goliath Replica , but I get a feeling they largely went straight into museums & official technical collections, being seen as such interesting devices (despite their apparently somewhat patchy usage history. Though that raises the question of just how many accounts of Goliath attack are there? I can't recall many. Wondering if anyone on the receiving end would not be too clear on what actually went bang.).

The Shadock lists a few of the bigger Borgwards as survivors, http://the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Springer_Borgward.pdf , but doesn't seem to have a pdf for 302&3 Goliaths. Certainly a fairly common sight in museums. Wiki lists 29, but there are definitely others extant.

The splendid Hermann Historica sold one in 2010, but no price info:
    Nachbau eines
Also maybe one in 2008. (HH - For all your Ladungstrager needs! )

Anyone seen a real Goliath sold? How much?
