I'm trying to find info on a family member. Very limited info - was Italian PoW who worked at my grandparents farm, Gatewarth Farm, Cheshire, England in 1945. Possible that he was staying at the nearby Penketh Camp and transported over to the farm to work. Don't know where to start looking for info on this. Any advice would be much appreciated.
A name? Any information that you have, dates, locations etc. Presumably he was an Italian national who was POW?
All we have are some old postcards he sent back from San Sosti, Italy. These are signed 'Frank' and one is dated the 10th Dec 1946. We know he was working on the farm in 1945. Gatewarth Farm is gone now, but used to be next to the Mersey river to the west of Warrington and South of Penketh I know its a long shot!
Ok, an Italian called Frank, I see what you mean! Afraid I won't be much help, best I can do: Prisoners of war in British hands - The National Archives The camp is listed here: Every prisoner of war camp in the UK mapped and listed POW camps in the UK I think this refers: The Italian connection Remnants possibly remain: Just as a matter of interest you say that you are trying to find info on a family member, presumably the Italian POW, who was working at your grandparents farm? Good luck!
Thanks Tony, My mum recently did the dna test which confirmed Italian dad. The postcards came out of the blue when her auntie pasted away recently. Really appreciate the links, massive puzzle but determined to find who my granddad was! Bob
