    Hadn’t seen this thread before, and I’m afraid I can’t help re George Caines.

    Re Zammit, not much but: the name Bottiche is quite possibly an Italicisation of the common Maltese surname Buttigieg (Italian was - and is - widely spoken in Malta, an O in Italian is commonly a U in Maltese, and both Gs are pronounced more or less like the final sound In “bridge”).

    The International Bomber Command Centre at Bracebridge Heath has a photo of JJ Zammit at the entrance door of Lancaster W4964, connect:
    Sergeant John Joseph Zammit · IBCC Digital Archive
    with an unattributed annotation on the reverse: 'Sgt John Joseph Zammit probably an American in the RCAF'.

    Afternote: The UK Govt company search website lists a coincidental name as well.

    Zammit is the gunner in the middle of this photo I think - There's a better one of him on pg 70 of Robertson's 'Lancaster - The Story of a Famous Bomber'. According to that he was from New York.
