    Hi all

Taking on board the advice from Tony56 - here is the Service Record for Bertie in a much easier to read format.

Any help would be greatly appreciated to maybe ascertain where he would have served in India, what he got in trouble for etc.

I've also re-uploaded his TA record.

    Kind regards

    Adam,

It would be far better to have one thread on your grandfather Bertie, not three. They are all about one person's history. Perhaps a Moderator can merge them?

His attestation to R.A. He lived not far from me. I rented a house in Schreiber road for a few months too. Piper.jpg

Brilliant. Mr granddad and his siblings grew up in Schreiber Road. He lives round the corner on Woodbridge Road.

I believe the TA Centre/RA Centre used to be near where the Mulberry Tree pub/Caribbean Club used to be.

If someone can help with this then great. I find this site tough to navigate.

Thanks for posting his records. Make up a timeline of dates and units and then seek out histories and war diaries that will tell you where the various units were and what they were involved in. As far as his misdemeanours are concerned you may find something in the appendices that hopefully accompany the diaries, unlikely to be in the diaries themselves. The Regimental Orders often give details of Courts of Inquiry etc. Not certain but perhaps.

His records show that he was in hospital at times, he does not appear in the casualty lists so possibly not a battle injury.

The records do name one place in India and you could research what the army were involved in:

You will struggle to identify the details behind the discipline entries in the papers released by MOD. The Kings Regulation numbers do not cover his specific breaches.

Fuller detail will be recorded on the B120 and B121 army forms that record details of disciplinary cases. Unfortunately MOD do not release them.

Correct; After being the R.A. T/A Centre, it was then home to Police, early 60's housing BMW motor bikes and Panda cars, It eventually became the Carribean club (had some great nights in there). It is now a car park for the new flats. My Father in law joined up there in 1938, evacuated from Dunkirk and went on to serve in Burma on Priest's.

    Adam.

1 AGRA arrived in Italy in Oct 43 under V (BR) Corps who were operating on the Adriatic side and pushing north towards the River Sangro.

It was then transferred under X (BR) Corps in Feb 44 to beef up the operations in the hills beyond the Garigliano where 46 Inf Div were operating. X (BR) Corps lost a lot of its artillery when 5 Inf Div and 56 Inf Div were moved from the Garigliano to Anzio.

After the fall of Rome in Jun 44, 1 AGRA was switched again this time under XIII (BR) Corps.

In Aug 44, 1 AGRA reverted back under V (BR) Corps until the end of the war in May 45.

    Regards

    Frank

Can anyone decipher the attached? Royal Scots but can't work out what it means. 11AG (11 Army Group??).

Second one says "10 Hld Bn" = 10 Holding Battalion.

I’m not sure that there is much that I can add. As pointed out above, the form that normally proves the most useful – B103 – seems to be missing. Most of the information that we have comes from his B200b.

A pre-war TA enlistment and re-enlisted 1940, embodiment deferred to 1941, as a field artilleryman and posted to 129 Field Regiment. This unit later served in Burma, but was still in the UK at this time.

He was transferred to the LAA branch and posted to India in 1942.

From the RA Depot at Deolali he was posted to 28 LAA Regt. This unit served in the Indo-Burmese border area under command of 4 Corps and 23 Indian Division.

At some point between 06/05/44 and 12/06/44 he seems to have been transferred to 78 LAA Regt, which was also under command of 4 Corps in the Imphal area at this time.

In 08/44 he was transferred once again, this time to the Royal Scots, an infantry regiment. This was a common occurrence at this time; the Japanese air threat had decreased significantly and the British infantry battalions of 14 Army were running short of infantrymen.

11 AG is indeed 11 Army Group, which was the superior formation to 14 Army, and it is they that would have ordered this move.

In 09/44 he returned to the UK, which is odd since he had only served two and a bit years overseas, which is less than usual.

Back in the UK he seems to be under what I assume to be ‘Scottish Command Pool of Soldiers’, but this is a bit out of my area, so I may be wrong. Also reference to a 10 Holding Battalion, but no date.

I note the award of the 1939-43 Star and the War Medal, but can see no mention of the Burma Star, to which he would have been entitled if he had served in the above-named LAA units.

It really is a shame that the B103 is missing.

    Hope that is some help.
