164132 (5613720) Charles Henry WARE, RTR: Dunkirk

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by Carlos Noguera, Oct 8, 2017.

  1. My great-uncle Charles Henry Ware served in the RTR in India (11th Light Tank Regiment) and at the start of the war was sent to France and participated in the operations. He was a sargent at the time, and for his actions was sent to Sandhurst and promoted to Lieutenant. I have recently found a copy of his obituary, but I have no idea how to get info on his Dunkirk unit and personal actions.
    Service number 164132, death: 24/04/1942
Any guidance will be very appreciated.

Annoyingly CWGC doesn't record which regiment he was with. No joy on the National Archives either by searching for his MiD.

It looks as if he was with a training establishment in the UK. As a sergeant he's unlikely to be mentioned in war diaries although his MID action could be.
If it was truly 'before Dunkirk' then 1st Army Tank Brigade might be most likely. Do the diaries for 4 or 7 RTR mention him ?

There is a list of recommendations in 7 RTR's diary but it's only for medals and not MIDs plus I suspect it's just for the battle of Arras rather than the whole campaign-In short not conclusive.
