Has anyone got a WW2 map of Italy Sheet 158 IV NW 1:25 000?
It's the western part of Anzio Beachead near Ardea.
I have some grid references to where Sgt Rogers of 2 Wilts won his VC.
The NE Spur, map ref 776369.
Would like to find the exact location.
Have sketch maps but I want to be more precise.

Spent all day look for one in the 1st Division HQ files at the National Archives... sadly no luck. Going to have to go down to Brigade and Battalion level now.

    Paul,
When you going to TNA again?
Could you have a look at 5th Div & 2 Wilts Diaries for a map?
The 2 Wilts one I have from The Wardrobe is just a transcription, no Appendix or maps.

I won't be there until after Easter, but will add those to the list. I might look at 5 Div HQ diaries as well, to see what is there.

Owen. I'll see if I manage to get a look when I'm next there (either next Thursday or the week after).

    Hi Ownen,
I don't know if you already found your map and/or if this topic is still valid for you, but I live in Italy and found out that most military maps used during WW2 are based on map material from the Italian Military Geographic Institute (Istituto Geografico Militare or IGM).
Check out this website where you can order the maps online.
Catalogo Carte IGM - Serie 25 - in scala 1:25.000

Be sure you check out the 25v (vecchia edizione = old edition) 25 stands for 1:25.000

Good luck and let me know if you need any help.

Thanks JayKay - I have found detailed maps the most difficult thing to get in Italy. How do we order these maps? Can we do it online?

    Cheers JayKay,
Would those WW2 co-ords work on one of the maps you mention?
Aha! I've just checked that website you gave, any chance you can get one for me?
158 IV NO is the one I want!!!

    I'll send you the cash!
As Paul said we couldn't find any decent maps when we were in Italy.

I have a couple of maps at the office that were used by the Canadians up near Rome. Is there any interest in these. I haven't looked at them in some years, but would gladly look them up if any of you lads want me to.

Also, does TNA stand for The National Archives, and how hard is it to look up a Crimean medal.

    thanks

I shall do that, Owen, and let you know what I have. As I recall, they were top sheets used by our Horse Guards as they moved up the spine. I will advise on Tuesday when I am back in.

    Miltary Cross -
The Governor General's Horse Guards were the 3rd Recce Regiment attached to the 5th Armoured Div and - unless they changed over to the 1st Armoured Brigade while I was not looking - they stayed with 5th Armoured around Rome and took part in the big scam at Naples etc when they played around in boats to conn Kesselring into thinking that the Canadians were going to land near Spezia for another Anzio above his Gothic Line

So Kesselring sent his best i.e 1st Paras and 26th Panzers to the coast - meanwhile 1st Armoured bde went " up the spine" with X111 corps to Florence - 1st Inf. Div joined them after arest near Naples and swanned around throwing Canadian cigarette packages ( empty) and other Canadian garbage into the Arno - Kesselring then brought his best back to the Florence area - we all ( 1st Div and 21st Brit Tank Bde) did a 180 back to Fabriano - over to Jesi and 25th August crossed the Metauro to start the Gothic Line Battle - took Kesselring four days to get the 1st paras - 26th Panzers and 29th PG's over to face us - by that time we were over the Foglia and heading for Coriano !
Now if you have a map of that area (jesi - Rimini) - I'll take it off your hands !!!

I bow to your wisdom on this Tom, and should have dug the maps out before making comment. My memory is that they are of the area east of Rome and more in the centre, but that is memory and memory is faulty, especially when I can hide my own Easter eggs now. The conversation with Mac was so many years ago, and it is an area of the world where I know little about other than a number of our lads are still there. These fellows are actually the area of my interest. I don't think I have anthing as far north as Rimini, but will advise.

Don't worry about it - you are right about being near Rome - after the Liri valley we all stopped at Agnani SE of Rome as the French were getting in the way - that is 1st Cdn Div - 5th Cdn Armoured and our 25th and 21st Tank bdes when we handed over to the 6th South African Div - 1st Cdn Armoured Bde went on with 4th Brit - 6th Brit armoured and the Sth Africans towards Trasimeno - we went off for a rest at Velletri for a while before heading up the Florence way
    Cheers

I have a 1942 map1:100,000 Sheet 162 Campobasso and another marked Italy Road Map 1:200,000 Sheet 17 which is pretty much Roma and Cassino as the limits east west. Looks like it is an American product based on the Italian Touring Club map number 17. I think I have another one somewhere, but all I found was Borden and Petawawa from this era.

    Miltary Cross -
Campobasso has a great many memories for the Candians as they made it into a rest centre - where they really "rested" at every opportunity - even when in the North of Italy !
    Cheers
